KALKI 2098AD : 3.0 Stars

Kalki 2098 Trailer

Directed by - Nag Ashwin

Starring - Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Disha Patani

WHY : A great creative concept pulled out Mahabharata's character and projected him in 2098. Awesome setup. Someone put together a script and actually thought about it! Ashwathama from Mahabharata is kept alive forever until he saves Lord Krishna when he takes avatar as Kalki in 2098 when earth is breathing it's last. If it was not for 80+ Amitabh Bachchan this movie was unbearable to watch, his entire role of Ashwathama saves this movie. Deepika can do nothing wrong and surprisingly Disha Patani is good too.

WHY NOT : Kamal Hassan is into his getups and is very weird, but still ok. Prabhas is probably Salman of South, he has no skills, not even a screen presence. His role is shoddy probably playing to his fans. The comedy is bad his intro scene was like 30 minutes long, I went out and got M&Ms and that scene still went on. The movie focusses on all sorts of gimmicks borrowed from Black Panther, Marvel and all other Hollywood movies, I think I saw Mad Max in their too. The story was powerful but they did not use it and hence no emotions were available to be experienced outside of Amitabh and Deepika's personal brilliance. No songs, no good dialogues in a 3 hour long saga.

KILL : 4.5 Stars.

Kill Trailer

Directed by - Nikhil Nagesh Bhat

Starring: Lakshya, Raghav Juyal, Ashish Vidyarthi, Harsh Chhaya, Tanya Maniktala, Abhishek Chauhan

WHY : First ever out and out action movie from India. Well, there has been others a notable mention is Bloody Daddy, but this one looked straight out of Hollywood. Karan Johar production is generally Disney of India, always good clean movies with a message. Scratch that for this one, it is bloody gory and just pure revenge. Just kill no drama. AND what a way to do it. Awesome, just the fact they pulled it off in every scene to keep to their North Star of making a movie - KILL. Go Watch it. Entire movie is in a train. Girl's family is riding the train and the lover boy boards it too, but so do goons who want to loot the entire train. That's all you need to know. The lover boy is an Army commando and the goons are 40+ with a plan. Let the killing begin.

WHY NOT : It is very bloody and very gory. Even though it has been done tastefully. Anyone who thinks they liked Animal because of action (they were wrong), it was all about celebration of everything bad in society. In KILL it is pure action and still a celebration of goodness. It has more killing than any movie you have seen but still it works. Only if Lakshya the new actor knew how to act a little better and Raghav could have been replaced by a little more of a villain this would be a 5 Starrrer.

CHANDU CHAMPION: 3.75 STARS.

Chandu Champion Trailer

Directed by - Kabir Khan

Starring - Kartik Aaryan, Vijay Raaz, Bhuvan Arora

WHY : Well made bio-epic. A forgotten star brought to light after the Para Olympics records were recently published about an Indian medalist. A great roller coaster story of this man who comes from a small town goes to Army to earn a medal in wrestling. One of the few real life stories that also entertain.

WHY NOT : As usual starts slow takes awful long time to pick speed. I have to applaud Karthik Aryan for trying different roles and trying his best to put in a good performance. But the performance is good not great. This movie has every ingredient to become a 4.5 stars except for it fails to tug at your heart. A great actor would make you cry, but Karthik fails though he tries. He doesn't have the skills, maybe one day he will.

MR AND MRS MAHI - 3.5 STARS.

Mr and Mrs Mahi - Trailer

Directed by - Sharan Sharma

Starring - Rajkumar Rao, Janhvi Kapoor

WHY : Mr Dependable Rajkumar Rao himself is enough to watch a movie. This is a cricket movie that has nothing to do with Mr Mahi (Dhoni). Our Lovers in the movie both have their nik names as Mahi and hence the movie. Another slow starting movie that has a good cute love story vibe and then we have our Mr Bechara, greatest loser of all time of Bollywood Mr Rajkumar Rao who does enough to keep it going. Not the best Janhvi Kapoor movie but she is passable. The movie just like Chandu Champion doesn't breach the 4.0 Star bar because the chemistry and the emotions don't make you choke up. Anyways I have talked enough about this in my Podcast.

WHY NOT : If you don't want to see how easily Jahnvi hits sixes without sweating at all, then don't watch it. Somewhat boring storyline between Dad and Son and it's an average love story so it's up to you. If you don't end up watching no big deal. I won't get mad at you. From 2.5-3.75 Stars it's up to you watch it or skip it. 4 Stars and above, if you don't watch a movie I will personally come to your home and yell outside your window and tell your neighbors you are a loser... and no not a cool loser like Rajkumar Rao.

CREW - 3.5 STARS.

Crew - Trailer

Directed by - Rajesh A Krishnan

Starring - Tabu, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Kriti Sanon

WHY : I missed reviewing this movie for sometime. It looks like Charlies Angels of Bollywood from looks of it. But it is not. All 3 good actors put on a show! The great thing about the movie was it was a movie! You know not a women led movie but just a movie that happens to have women in the lead and only women. It made sense, the script demanded it and they were there. None of them had women problems, they were just human problems. I enjoyed it, a good break from monotony. 3 air hostess of a struggling airlines are struggling in life when they see a life line, it is illegal but who cares.

WHY NOT : It's not out and out entertainer. Also its been a while, I saw it in the theater so hardly remember much of it. When it is fresh sometimes you find a lot of flaws, but over time because I am a positive minded person I forget the flaws and remember the good things. See how I made myself better than I am? That's called a script and good film making.

YODHA : 2.0 Stars.

Yodha - Trailer

Directed by - Sagar Ambre, Pushkar Ojha

Starring - Sidharth Malhotra, Raashii Khanna, Disha Patani

WHY : If you like to look at Siddharth Malhotra like me, sure go ahead and watch it. Otherwise it will be a tough ask to get you to watch this one. Just watch the trailer and call it done, is one way to get it out of the way. If I remember correctly this soldier is the superman who won't take orders but can deliver the goods in a mission. He is fired and brought back because a plane is getting Hijacked in OBVIOUSLY Pakistan. He somehow is always in all planes getting hijacked. After a lot of action in couple of plane hijacking, it is time to save Indian politicians and Pakistani politicians in Pakistan. You get the point. Not very bad but just a bad one.

WHY NOT : Same old script, Indian soldier and PAKISTAN!! Villains talking bad about India then our hero destroying them and using a few one liners, that don't make sense.

SHAITAAN : 2.5 Stars.

Shaitaan - Trailer

Directed by - Vikas Bahl

Starring - Ajay Devgn, R. Madhavan, Jyothika, Janki Bodiwala, Anngad Raaj

WHY : Inspired by Drishyam, but can't match it. Ajay Devgan is trying to save his daughter from a psychic tantrik or whatever that is called. Madhavan the villain is some tantrik taking control of girls for god knows what. The movie goes in circles inside one home, good for the budget. I am not sure of the genre but it is something like a thriller, psychotic horrorish thing. The only bright spot is Jyothika who acts and emotes and raises the bar but others are just passable.

WHY NOT : Ajay Devgan's confused look, Madhavan trying too hard to be a villain. The stupid script celebrating all kinds of 'Andh Vishwas'. Black Magic, the name itself has Magic in it, how can it be real?? It needs to be called out why are only girls supposed to be vulnerable to all these black magic stuff? Why can't boys and men be used and reduced into a puppet by doing a few tricks? Or are men just too smart and cannot fall for it? Hardly any tantrik is a girl but all these men are always easily tricking girls into it. Well, let me not rant. I don't have time for it and I am running late to post this blog which works magic on you guys irrespective of you being girl or a boy. (That's called 'placement' of an ad of my blog in my own blog)

KHO GAYE HUM KAHAN : 4.5 Stars.

Kho Gaye Hum Kahan - Trailer

Directed by - Arjun Varain Singh

Starring - Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ananya Panday, Adarsh Gourav

WHY : You know these uncle directors who try to make a movie about young people and end up with a weird looking movie that shows what uncle's brain sees the young world to be? Yes, that exactly this movie is NOT. This is actually made by young people, acted by them and done perfectly well, Zoya hardly gets it wrong Akhtar is involved so it was going to be good. The first ever movie I have seen that captures social media and lives of cute little 20 somethings kids. The pressures and the relationships, beautifully written, every character has so much depth and thought. All the friends have equally meaty character and lives. Just poetry. Ananya, Sidhanth, Kalki and Adarsh all do great, they just were made for this movie.

WHY NOT : Maybe it's not your genre, and if you are egotistical 30+ already turned uncle aunty, all you will do is scorn at young people and say how great your lives were as you scroll your phone for more political news. Then don't watch it.

MAHARAJ : 3.0 Stars.

Maharaj - Trailer

Directed by - Siddharth P. Malhotra

Starring - Junaid Khan, Jaideep Ahlawat, Shalini Pandey, Sharvari

WHY : A 18th or 19th century disgusting saga about a baba using girls for sex as a form of religious ceremony as disciples watch it by paying money! Was this true? The premise itself is so disgusting that I am wondering if it actually happened! Can we stop thinking that 'past' was something pure and better? Well, no one said that, but this was outlandishly disgusting. Even today's villain demonic babas do their bad things in private and once it comes out in public they do sometimes get punished. Anyways this is a debut vehicle for Aamir Khan's son Junaid and the villain baba is Jaideep Ahlawat, who after all his successes still is putting everything in his performances. He has completely transformed himself physically and plays this character in his own way, rethinking the entire villain attitude. His smug smile never becomes a laugh and he never loses his cool... awesome cool style...

WHY NOT : Not a very pleasant watch, Junaid plays a real life social reformer who challenges the baba. He is no Aamir Khan not in acting nor in looks. He has a diction problem just like all star kids. He tries hard but that's it. The sets and clothes and general feel looks more like 1940s than 1860s or whenever this film was supposed to be made.

BADE MIYAN CHHOTE MIYAN : 2.5 Stars.

Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan - Trailer

Directed by - Ali Abbas Zafar

Starring - Akshay Kumar, Tiger Shroff, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Manushi Chhillar, Alaya F, Sonakshi Sinha, Ronit Roy

WHY : The original Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan had the best music ever, but don't expect that from this one. For all it's flaws the script does have some twists and surprises. Everything is possible in the movie. Iron mask villain, genetic mutations, cloning and all. In the end it is 2 soldiers in Akshay and Tiger who can do no wrong and obviously won't listen to any orders but will get the job done. Is there ever a soldier in Indian movies who actually followed orders?? I think in history of Bollywood this has never happened! This is how much we hate rules and civilized society, and then we wonder why are we corrupt. Too much action and too many missions later they do save the world, or India whatever it was, funny that the thing that was going to destroy the entire world was called a 'Package'.

WHY NOT : Akshay has become unbearable to the point of what Dharam pa used to be after his prime when he would come in movies like 'paap ko jala ke rakh kar dunga'. Akshay's mustaches are becoming funnier every movie. Tiger is too plastic and chiseled but at least fights well. Both don't try to act or put anything meaningful into the movie. Too much waste of resources in action sequence. The villain is let's say 'different' but he ends up being some kind of software engineer in the end. I agree with that, all software engineers ARE the real problem in this world. You know what I am done talking about it.

CHAMKILA : 3.5 Stars.

Chamkila - Trailer

Directed by - Imtiaz Ali

Starring - Diljit Dosanjh, Parineeti Chopra

WHY : Sincerity of Diljit Dosanjh in getting into a character's skin is amazing. He once did a great movie on 1984 Sikh riots. This guy is a proud Sikh and does it the right way. Last I saw him appear in Jimmy fallon's late night show and did a number from his album. The entire number was in 'thet' Punjabi and he didn't care. He doesn't cater to the UK Punjabi types where they just speak some Punjabi, English Hindi all mixed into some crass wording rap song. The guy stays true to his art. He gives it all in Chamkila the guy who sang crass numbers but was very popular just to be killed by extreme sections of Sikh religion. We also have this blogger's favorite Parineeti and she can't do nothing wrong.

WHY NOT : It is kind of a biopic, and that too have been very true to what Chamkila actually was. So when something is too authentic it gives you more pain than entertainment.

AE WATAN MERE WATAN : 2.0 Stars.

Ae Watan Mere Watan - Trailer

Directed by - Kannan Iyer

Starring - Sara Ali Khan, Anand Tiwari, Sachin Khedekar

WHY : A kind of Biopic of this female freedom fighter who kept the radio going to transmit messages for Indian freedom movement. Not a bad try, but too many patriotic movies have similar theme that you get numbed into it. A big surprise is Emraan Hashmi playing Ram Manohar Lohiya the famous freedom fighter and a bigger surprise is - It Works!! He actually works!! Great Job Mr Hashmi.

WHY NOT : Kudos to Sara Ali Khan, she is female Kartik Aryan of the industry. Both of them try various roles and show genuine interest to get better and both mostly fail to get there. But they are getting better. Sara has this intense piercing look that she gives whenever she thinks she has to give an intense performance. Sadly no one will give her tips to fix simple things, because these stars probably don't have mentors and teachers anymore.

MAIDAAN : 1.5 Stars.

Maidaan - Trailer

Directed by - Amit Sharma

Starring - Ajay Devgn, Priyamani, Gajraj Rao

WHY : Good to know about an Indian Soccer coach who took the Indian soccer team to Olympics and then won Asian medal, the only time an Indian soccer team has ever won anything. For that knowledge you don't need to sit through a movie, but sure if that's the only way you are going to know about him then look at Ajay Devgan pretending to be a coach. But I just told you what I learned sitting through it so...

WHY NOT : Ajay Devgan never ever talks soccer in the entire movie. No strategy no moves no nothing. He just tries to look confused and look in the distance. The players try to put some character in the movie. Typical Indian football federation villains act like very filmy villains. Overall please don't make these sports biopics just because they are trendy. Sports biopic need a 'Junoon' to make it not put some money and say - Bhai ek sports biopic dena'

BUDGET MOVIES

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LSD 2 - 0 STARS.

LSD 2 - Trailer

Directed by - Dibakar Banerjee

Starring - Paritosh Tiwari, Bonita Rajpurohit, Abhinav Singh, Swaroopa Ghosh

WHY : Dude! I gave it a zero! Well, I know you are not asking the Why, I am. It is the format, what can I do. Well I can change it but I did not. Kill me! What the heck why am I talking to myself, it's not even talking I am writing and talking to myself. ANYWAYS... You can watch it because I did not finish it! I betrayed my blog's tagline! 'I see it so you don't have to.' Maybe that's good enough reason to check it out.

WHY NOT : The movie is a Big Boss type of show, yes that's the movie the entire show ... that's it. It is horrible, only good thing is you don't get mad or frustrated. You are just like.... ummm is that a movie? Maybe you guys are right, what the heck am I doing with my life watching movies and writing blogs.

SHARMAJEE KI BETI : 4.5 Stars.

SharmaJee Ki Beti - Trailer

Directed by - Tahira Kashyap Khurrana

Starring - Sakshi Tanwar, Divya Dutta, Saiyami Kher, Parvin Dabas, Sharib Hashmi

WHY : It is a entertaining, fun and awesome movie. There are many Sharmajis and a few Sharma betis lives are intertwined in the most entertaining manner in this low key but great ride. Kudos to the writer and director (Tahira Kashyap Khurrana) to keep it engaging and not didactic. Keep it funny and not a life lesson. Cricketer gal (Saiyami Kher) has a boy friend who wants a typical girl friend, small town Mrs Sharma (Divya Dutta) can't figure why everyone is busy in mumbai and what they are running after. Career oriented Mrs Sharma (Sakshi Tanwar) is tired of being apologetic to like her job. But why this is a 4.5 Star and not a 3.5 Star movie is because of the best character of the year in Swati Sharma (Vanshika Taparia). She is hilarious as a middle schooler who is waiting for her periods as she wants to grow up into a woman but the entire world seems to be against her happiness. She can't think anything except her puberty this great actor plays the funny character to perfection. Hats off, a great star has arrived!

WHY NOT : It is a typical small budget movie, no action, no testosterone driven dialogues, no item number. No hateful rhetoric, no hindu-musalman. So it depends on who you are. If you don't like it, keep it to yourself, cuz am gonna judge you.

MUNJYA: 2.0 STARS.

Munjya Trailer

Directed by - Aditya Sarpotdar

Starring - Sharvari, Abhay Verma, Mona Singh, Sathyaraj

WHY: If you like chhichhori comedy this is for you. The cute little ghost called Munjya was pretty slick. The plot is funny in parts, the ghost wants to marry his sweetheart! He needs a body of his own family to make this happen. If you end up watching it watch till almost the end because Munjya does eat someone's balls and that was the only funny scene I thought.

WHY NOT : It is a genre called Horror comedy, but it is not horror nor comedy. Some how it skips both! The female lead is pretty good but male lead even though not a nepo baby has hard time pulling this movie together. Comic timing and writing of scenes is flawed.

PATNA SHUKLA : 3.75 Stars.

Patna Shukla - Trailer

Directed by - Vivek Budakoti

Starring - Raveena Tandon, Manav Vij, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Satish Kaushik

WHY : If you like small budget cute movies this is your movie. A small time lawyer who won't be taken seriously gets to help a girl who knows she did better than what her marks show. As they go about this seemingly innocuous case they run into big time scam. Raveena is first female actor who actually took upon her an accent, though she did not do great but at least somewhat she did speak bihari dialect. This is big deal because I have not seen a female lead ever having an accent except for weird or comic ones like hyderabadi actor who actually did not know hindi in one of the movies or Deepika in Chennai express. This is the first serious try at it and she does a pretty good job. Since Khuda Gawah I have always thought why Amitabh had a Pathan accent but Sridevi did not!

WHY NOT : Same as above. It is small budget women oriented movie. You know the drill for why not to.

MADGAON EXPRESS : 3.5 Stars.

Madgaon Express - Trailer

Directed by - Kunal Khemu

Starring - Divyenndu, Pratik Gandhi, Avinash Tiwary, Nora Fatehi, Upendra Limaye, Chhaya Kadam

WHY : It is from our own Kunal Khemu. He has a great balance between stupid and simple comedy. His comic timing is great too. 3 friends unite after many years to complete their childhood dream to have a goa trip. All 3 don't have as great a life but they project one. In Goa they run into comedy of errors one after the other and before you know they are being chased by under world and cops.

WHY NOT : It is just a stupid comedy, you will get a few laughs but maybe a few yawns too. Just fast forward it whenever you want, the story is pretty easy to understand.

DANGE : 3.0 Stars.

Dange - Trailer

Directed by - Bejoy Nambiar

Starring - Harshvardhan Rane, Ehan Bhat, Arjun Das, Kalidas Jayaram, Nikita Dutta, Sanchana Natarajan

WHY : Bhai cool college kids wali movie banayenge, mast elections, campus rivalry, fights etc. 2 brothers head to head clash at the campus due to bad blood in the past, will their love rise or will they be consumed by revenge... dhan ta naaaane... taana na nen....

WHY NOT : The actors are over the top stylish girls are over the top going for a cool look. Females were ok and men needed to tone down there over the top get up that overshadowed everything they were doing. ALSO, can you stop showing medical colleges for god's sakes!! None of them look doctors come on man!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WEB SERIES

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

KOTA FACTORY Season 3 : 3.0 Stars.

KOTA FACTORY Season 3 - Trailer

Directed by - Raghav Subbu, Pratish Mehta

Starring - Mayur More, Ranjan Raj, Alam Khan, Jitendra Kumar, Revathi Pillai, Urvi Singh, Ahsaas Channa

WHY : This is the third season, if you have watched the first 2 you know the drill. It is the finale, the kids are ready to give IIT exams and we come to know who got in and who did not. More importantly how great Jeetu bhaiya is.

WHY NOT : This was a little bit of a let down. One I have never liked their black and white take, second Jeetu Bhaiya suddenly going into depression and going to psychologist doesn't gel with the fun vibe of the show. They tried to get into philosophical aspect of coaching and how some kids don't make it but everyone is an equal. They tried and failed miserably.

Here is my take - None of these coaching classes are needed, if everything is banned, still the same kids will probably go to Engineering and MBBS colleges. Same kids will have the relative pressure but less, overall. Same kids will try hard at home rather than in a hostel and not spend precious teenage time away from home. So this is all a machine developed to make money which is completely useless and it's output is zero or negative. They could have shown that how less people get into IIT but others go on to have great lives and are not instantly killed as sometimes we think in the moment. But they just failed.

PANCHAYAT 3 : 4.0 Stars.

Panchayat 3 - Trailer

Directed by - Deepak Kumar Mishra

Starring - Jitendra Kumar, Raghubir Yadav, Neena Gupta,, Chandan Roy, Faisal Malik

WHY : If you have watched the 5 starrer first and second seasons, obviously you are going to watch the third one. I think it is the finale, and hopefully they won't make another one. Actually scratch that I know they are going to make another one.

WHY NOT : Just like Kota Factory, this comes in as a little bit of a downer. All the same characters make us enjoy life the same way but the complexity keeps on increasing and the stakes keep getting higher with too much of politician involvement etc. It did not remain as simple as the first, but to their credit how could they have kept it that simple either.

LOOTERE : 3.5 Stars.

Lootere - Trailer

Directed by Jai Mehta

Starring Vivek Gomber, Rajat Kapoor,, Amruta Khanvilkar, Martial Batchamen Tchana

WHY : First time I have seen an Indian show shot in Africa with half the cast African! That is pretty cool. The show is also very uniquely different about corrupt Indian business man in Somalia and his greed that puts a ship at risk as an Indian crew of the ship is kidnapped by pirates. Jay Mehta does an excellent job of carrying this show with some great actors from Africa. This is something different that you have never watched before.

WHY NOT : The ship scenes become long and some scenes are gruesome and gross. The ship and the kidnapping by Pirates is dragged for way too long. The ending is very depressing.

JAWAN - 2.5 STARS. PG.

Podcast-review - Google / Samsung

Podcast-review - Apple

Jawan - Trailer

Directed by - Atlee

Starring - Shah Rukh Khan, Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi

Why Should I Watch it -

Because that's what you deserve. Zero creativity, mashup of all South Indian movie masala (which is the same masala since 80s). You don't like to watch anything different than the same ol crap for last 30 years. Go for it! Well I assumed your age is 50, you can counter saying what if I am 20? I have not watched this over the top melodrama and stylish super hero. Maybe it is my first time. To that I will say - accept apologies of an old prick.

What if I am a SRK fan? To that I will counter, then why is he pretending to be South Indian action hero or 80s hindi action hero? Why can't he do something he made his name on. That is making weird faces that are halfway between a smile and a cry and twist his eye brows into an S? To that you counter - what the heck are you talking about?

Why not -

Go against the current. Decide to become a human and have the courage to say - No. Take your first step towards spirituality.

BLOODY DADDY - 4.0 Stars. PG.

Bloody Daddy - Trailer

Directed by - Ali Abbas Zafar

Starring - Shahid Kapoor, Ronit Roy, Rajeev Khandelwal, Sanjay Kapoor, Diana Penty

Why Should I Watch it -

That's called an all out Action thriller. What a movie! Starcast is awesome everyone is at their Best. Shahid and Ronit are always reliable, but Sanjay Kapoor is awesome too!! yea you read it right. A cop messed up with gangsters and now he needs to get his son back. All in one night in one hotel during Covid times.

Why Not -

You don't like blood and stylish action? You don't like action? You enjoy songs in the movies and don't fast forward them. Then yes this one has almost no songs, except one. But that song is from Badshah - which I wish never happened.

FUKREY 3 - 2.5 Stars. PG.

Fukrey 3 - Trailer

Directed by - Mrighdeep Singh Lamba

Starring - Pulkit Samrat, Varun Sharma, Manjot Singh, Richa Chadha, Pankaj Tripathi

Why Should I Watch it -

If you are a fan like me, you need to watch it. I am in love with Chucha. So I went to theater to watch him. He does not disappoint and does every stupid idiotic thing that chucha should do. Deja Chu does not happen enough but then they do make hydro carbons because H for Hunny and C for Chucha. Chucha's piss and Hunny's sweat when combined makes petroleum. If this does not make you go and watch it, nothing will.

Why Not -

The makers decided to just use chucha's stupidity as the only plot for the movie. There is nothing else to keep the movie alive. Disappointing third part and hopefully the last.

ROCKY AUR RANI KI PREM KAHANI - 4.5 STARS. PG.

Podcast-review - Google / Samsung

Podcast-review - Apple

Rocky aur Rani ki Prem Khaaani - Trailer

Directed by - Karan Johar

Starring - Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt

Why should I watch it -

Remember NRI 90s movies that were tagged as Bollywood? yea Karan Johar is back! You crave a rich people love story? when did you last time see it? long time back. When did you actually laugh at a lead comic character? A mainstream masala movie with dollops of liberalism sprinkled all over - when did you last see that? When did you see every dialogue written so that you remember it forever?

तो भाई खड़ा खड़ा मुँह  क्या देख रहा है. जा मूवी लगा वेब पे  आ गयी है! क्या? तू आलरेडी देख चूका है? चल ठीक है फिर आगे ब्लॉग पढ़ ले.

Why not -

To annoy me? Because you suddenly are pretending that you like small budget realistic cinema even though you have not watched any of the ones I have been begging every one to watch? Forget it man, who am I to convince you.

JAILER - 1.5 STARS. PG.

Jailer - Trailer

Directed by - Nelson Dilipkumar

Starring - Rajinikanth, Vinayakan, Ramya Krishnan, Vasanth Ravi

Why Should I Watch it -

You are a Rajni fan? - Yes - Then you already watched it.
                                 - No - You don't know about this movie and you never will.

Why Not -
Because I started and forgot to finish it.

DREAMGIRL 2 - 4.0 STARS. PG13

Dream Girl 2 - Trailer

Directed by - Raaj Shaandilyaa

Starring - Ayushman Khurana, Ananya Panday, Paresh Rawal, Annu Kapoor, Vijay Raaz

Why Should I Watch it -

Every joke that is possible of a guy turning into a gal all have been used in this movie. You get all at one place. Every joke is delivered with a great comic timing by the great Ayushman Khurana. It felt stupid but we kept laughing.

Why Not -
'You have seen the Bollywood fetish of turning a guy into a gal and then creating joke routines. It is one long movie for one concept.

ADIPURUSH - 3.0 STARS. G.

Directed by - Om Raut
Starring - Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, Saif Ali Khan, Sunny Singh, Devdatta Nage

Why Should I Watch it -

If you are in India and been indoctrinated into being a militant Hindu. You were the reason this movie was made. Your leaders bankrolled this movie because all movies should be made with Ramayan as theme. So you better watch it. Also, surprisingly I liked the movie, I have never understood the quality of CGI as a barometer for film's entertainment. Dude I grew up watching Manmohan Desai's CGI. So I don't know why people said CGI was bad. I loved the Ravana in the movie. All good scenes were his, and Saif absolutely enjoyed playing that character. Either the dialogues were redacted from the online version or I thought it was really cool that there were very few of them. I liked the silence of the movie, people hardly spoke because everyone knows Ramayan! You don't have to explain it.

Why Not -

Very tacky and darkish Ramayan this. Ram is very uninspiring. How can you not be nervous playing lord Ram and Sita? Both Prabhas and Kriti look very nervous moving any body part, what if people lynch them if they find something wrong in their actions?

SATYAPREM KI KATHA - 3.0 STARS. G.

Sathyaprem ki Katha - Trailer

Directed by - Sameer Vidwans
Starring - Kartik Aaryan, Kiara Advani

Why Should I Watch it -

It is a good attempt to raise a few good issues in public interest. Challenging a few taboos of society. Good attempt for sure. The great Kiara Advani will emote and tug at your heart. Second half does pickup and get to the meat of the issue.

Why Not -

We all wait for Mr Kartik Aaryan to slowly figure how to act. Not yet, one day one day one day. Only industry in the world which gives you 10-20 years to figure how to do your job. The movie goes in circles like a pseudo activist without getting to the point. Once it gets to the point it does well.

BAWAAL - 3.5 STARS. PG13.

Bawaal - Trailer

Director - Nitesh Tiwari

Starring - Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor

Why Should I Watch it -

An honest attempt in trying to weave a story around world war narrative. Pretty gutsy attempt to do something different when audience don't care about watching anything different. A good for nothing teacher visits world war 2 memorials to teach kids about it. The horrors of world war makes him forget his small little problems and his love life sprouts.

Why Not -

You are allergic to depressing stuff. You are anyways not very robust individual and hanging by a thread and don't want to watch anything that disturbs you.

IB71 - 1.5 STARS. PG.

IB71 - Trailer

Director - Sankalp Reddy

Starring - Vidyut Jammwal, Vishal Jethwa, Faizan Khan, Anupam Kher

Why Should I Watch it -

If you are the BJP patriot who can't get enough of nationalism especially anything against Pakistan. Masquerading as a true story but taking so many liberties with truth that it looks outlandish even for movies.

Why Not -

It is not very entertaining.

BUDGET MOVIES
   ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JAANE JAAN - 5 STARS. PG-13

Jaane Jaan - Trailer

Directed by - Sujoy Ghosh

Starring - Kareena Kapoor Khan, Jaideep Ahlawat, Vijay Varma

Why Should I Watch it -

Because it is the best thriller you will watch this year. Because Jaideep Ahlawat shows you how to get into a character and do magic. Because Kareena and Jaideep and Vijay Varma create an atmosphere that has never been created before. Because you have never seen a thriller, where you know everything but you are still stressed out.

Why Not -
Because you are a Jerk? Because it is a somewhat similar to Drishyam? Because you are used to crap?

NEEYAT - 2.0 STARS. PG13.

Neeyat - Trailer

Directed by - Anu Menon

Starring - Vidya Balan, Ram Kapoor, Rahul Bose, Dipannita Sharma, Shashank Arora, Shahana Goswami, Neeraj Kabi, Amrita Puri, Danesh Razvi, Prajakta Koli

Why Should I Watch it -

If you have not watched knives out. If you want to see bunch of people overacting trying to find the murderer. If you like bad copies of good movies. If you like to wait till the end for one final unique twist that answer your question - why Vidya Balan is acting so horribly.

Why Not -
See above.

TIKKU WEDS SHERU - 2.5 STARS. G.

Tiku Weds Sheru - Trailer

Director - Sai Kabir

Starring - Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Avneet Kaur

Why Should I Watch it -

Not a bad movie, but not a good one either. It starts with a lot of promise but loses steam somewhere in-between. Nawazuddin is always good and as a struggling actor who returns to his hometown to get married is a perfect role for him. It is pretty good time-pass.

Why Not -

You probably have watched similar stuff before. It is a small budget ok cinema which is not a must watch.

FRIDAY NIGHT PLAN - 5 STARS. G.

Friday Night Plan - Trailer

Directed by - Vatsal Neelakantan

Starring - Juhi Chawla, Babil Khan, Aadhya Anand, Ninad Kamat, Ria Chaudhary, Aditya Jain, Medha Rana

Why Should I Watch it -

How many great 'teen' movies have you seen? especially in Hindi films? This is a great great teen movie, probably one of the best we have seen. 2 brothers are alone overnight as mom leaves for work. They grow up a little and understand each other and the love grows between the siblings as they fight their own internal demons as well as cool kids, partying and cops.

Why not -

oh... I only watch Hindi movies that are big name bad movies. So I can watch them and feel superior by trashing them as rehash of hollywood.

oh .. I only like movies of my superstar, when he makes the same faces and has the same plot.. ahh the movies at their best.

AFWAAH - 4.0 STARS. PG13.

Afwaah - Trailer

Directed by Sudhir Mishra

Produced by Anubhav Sinha

Starring - Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Bhumi Pednekar, Sumeet Vyas, Sharib Hashmi

Why Should I Watch it -

You see the name 'Anubhav Sinha', then how can it be bad? Another social statement on how an idiot says something with no context to another idiot. The idiot picks it up and runs with it and soon entire country becomes an idiot. There is no difference between rumor and truth.

Why Not -

As soon as you see a intellectual movie you tune off. You start going off saying 'everything is great, everything is good'. 'Everyone who says anything is wrong is a traitor'. Then it's not for you.

WEB SERIES

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GUNS & GULAABS - 4.5 STARS. PG13

Guns & Gulaabs - Trailer

Directed by - Raj & DK

Starring - Rajkummar Rao, Dulquer Salmaan, Adarsh Gourav, Gulshan Devaiah

Why Should I Watch it -

Raj and DK are reliable names in entertainment productions, they hardly do anything wrong. Go goa gone, Unpaused, Farzi, Citadel and Family Man. Rajkummar Rao is perfect when he plays a 'fuddu' who gets caught up with underworld. Dulquer Salman has a complicated tough character and he does a great job of a cop who is not exactly righteous. The show belongs to the great Gulshan Devaiah who is having a lot of fun playing a fictitious character who almost has supernatural powers but in a realistic setup. It is just great fun to embed someone like that in a regular gangsta drama. Creativity at it's best.

Why Not -

Because web series are long? You don't like black comedies or too much creativity bothers you?

TRIAL - 2.0 STARS. PG13.

Trial - Trailer

Based on - The Good Wife by Robert King, Michelle King

Directed by - Suparn Verma

Starring - Kajol, Jisshu Sengupta, Kubbra Sait, Sheeba Chaddha, Alyy Khan, Gaurav Pandey

Why Should I Watch it -

You are old and you still think Kajol is a great actor?

Why Not -

It has everything that should be in a courtroom drama mixed with struggles of a wife with a high profile corrupt husband. But the show misses it's soul. It all looks forced and drawn.

MADE IN HEAVEN-2 - 4.0 STARS. PG13.

Made in heaven - Trailer

Directed by - Nitya Mehra, Zoya Akhtar, Reema Kagti, Prashant Nair, Alankrita Shrivastava, Neeraj Ghaywan

Starring - Arjun Mathur, Sobhita Dhulipala, Kalki Koechlin, Jim Sarbh, Shashank Arora, Shivani Raghuvanshi, Mona Singh, Trinetra Haldar Gummaraju, Ishwak Singh

Why Should I Watch it -

Arjun and Sobhita are great actors. They get a broad canvas to let their relationship thrive as friends and business partners in 'Made in Heaven' event management company. Every episode brings a new challenge with a new wedding to be planned. Along the way Zoya and Reema craft great but ultra liberal stories of relationships which are mostly entertaining and thought provoking. Another positive is an awesome Jim Sarbh and his divorce proceedings with Sobhita. Mona Singh knocks it out of the park with her personal issues slowly cooking in the background.

Why Not -

Over the top sex scenes and drugs. You feel dizzy and dirty after watching the show. You thank your stars that you are not rich. Is this all to be rich? Mentally unstable and waiting to drop into drugs? The over the top LGBTQ masala in every story and every aspect of relationship is tiring.

LUST STORIES 2 - 1.5 STARS. R.

Lust Stories 2 - Trailer

Directed by - R. Balki, Konkona Sen Sharma, Amit Ravindernath Sharma, Sujoy Ghosh

Starring - Kajol, Mrunal Thakur, Kumud Mishra, Angad Bedi, Amruta Subhash, Neena Gupta, Tamannaah Bhatia, Tillotama Shome, Vijay Varma

Why Should I Watch it -

There is exactly 1.5 good stories among the 5-6 stories in this series. Find them and watch them. I am not going to help you figure.

Why Not -

The directors confused 'Lust' with 'Expressing Sex'. Hardly any story is about Lust. An grandma is obsessed with finding the right Sex and lectures of importance of sex in relationship. SImilarly other stories are about something else except Lust.

SAAS BAHU AUR FLAMINGO - 3.5 STARS. R.

Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo - Trailer

Genre - Crime drama

Directed by - Homi Adajania

Starring - Dimple Kapadia, Radhika Madan, Isha Talwar, Deepak Dobriyal, Angira Dhar, Jimit Trivedi, Naseeruddin Shah

Why Should I Watch it -

Dimple, Radhika, Isha are 3 reasons to watch. First time you will see cool stylish Women gangsta. It's apparent they had a lot of fun making this blood soaked all girls gangsta movie. Watch it for the uniqueness of the entire thing.

Why not -

I always ask the South Indian movies - How much testosterone is too much testosterone? Then you can flip and ask - How much Estrogen is too much estrogen? This TV series after a point goes berserck with blood shed destruction. Dumb men destroying everything was not good enough? Now dumb women destroying everything too?

Top 10 Hindi Movies of 2020 / Top 3 Web series of 2020

1. BULBBUL

What I remember - Nice slap on patriarchy, beautiful colors and shades of red. Bulbull the witch and the goddess all in one. Beautiful direction enthralling thriller with a punch.

FROM THE FILES -

BULBBUL - 5 STARS. R. (DRAMA/ THRILLER / SUSPENSE)

Bulbbul Poster

Director: Anvita Dutt
Writer: Anvita Dutt
Stars: Tripti Dimri, Rahul Bose, Avinash Tiwary

A movie like this comes once in a 'Red' moon. When red night shows up the Kaali is alive and kickin. This is not just a thriller, or a murder mystery or a horror movie. It is not just a statement against patriarchy, it is actually a statement against the unjust system called society.
There are characters (The husband) that the system works for, he still can't find happiness, people with mental imbalance are powerful that they can't get help because system is designed to make them powerful even though they are in need of help (brother of husband) and obviously they are one and the same physically and in a twisted way ... mentally. There are vast majority the system does not work for but most of them accept it as the system they are born with, so what do they do? they work with it, manipulate it to have small meaningless wins (older / younger bahu). There are innocent people with good intentions who can't see anything bad in the system because it is working for them (The people who say - All lives matter not just Black!) unaware of their surroundings (like younger brother). The system is complete and it goes on and on, unless a witch shows up, or you can call it Durga or Kaali but ohh she is a bad ass. What if she says I don't like it and I don't give an F. Can you deal with her?

2. THAPPAD

What I remember - Another thappad at old school cinema. A coming of age on hindi movies from abusive relationship movies to this one. This is not against abuse or alcoholism but mostly about respect and dignity for every person around us. A simple act and small things in our lives we all can make effort to change and get better.

FROM THE FILES -

THAPPAD: 4.5 STARS. (DRAMA)

Thappad Poster

Director: Anubhav Sinha
Stars: Taapsee Pannu, Pavail Gulati, Ratna Pathak Shah

aah.. Mr Anubhav Sinha, Sir you are getting in the top echelons of my short list of directors. Yes, you don't know but that is a big accomplishment. This blog is followed by Millions.... umm... thousands.... umm... fffine.... hundreds... OOKK... scores of people. So take a bow you have made it. Mulk, Article 15 and now Thappad. That is a troika that can make anyone proud.

The simplicity is the hallmark of this movie. It is daily life, lines we say daily in our household, lives we 'the good sensitive people' live. AND so much is wrong with that life. Every line is so obviously regular and still so well thought out and so hard hitting at the same time. You would think abusive relationship is bad, physically abusive really bad, but otherwise we are programmed to just keep going.... for what? If we think and work on it we can become better humans, every day we need to work on becoming better person. We are here and living might as well try till we die. We actually try our hardest at work, in public, and in every sphere then why not at home. Very well done. Watch it.

3. COMEDY COUPLE

What I remember - A fresh love story, a different kind of lead couple as they do there couple things of fighting, loving and everything else in a very comic and no so comic way.

FROM THE FILES -

COMEDY COUPLE - 4.5 Stars. (PG13)

Director: Nachiket Samant
Stars: Saqib Saleem, Shweta Basu Prasad, Pooja Bedi

Saqib and Shweta are not just a comedy couple they take us through a great journey of ups and downs, fun and stress, and lots of comedy. What a nice sweet movie, perfect to sit late at night and relax, sit back and enjoy a complete movie. The parents, friends, situations all make you smile and the lies, and confusion of relationship makes you stressed but not a lot.
Movie is about a couple who do stand up comedy as a couple are in a live in relationship. Do they get together, stay as it is, separate and breakup? How much lying is good? How Cow urine is good for you? How dirty can a friend live and survive? All questions get answered. Watch it!

4. UNPAUSED

What I remember - Well written and beautifully acted all stories are work of art, as they progress the better they get. Even though I thought I don't want to relive the lockdown and 2020, these stories focussed more on story and less on covid.

FROM THE FILES -

UNPAUSED - 4.5 Stars. (R)

Directors - Nikkhil Advani, Avinash Arun, Tannishtha Chatterjee, Krishna D.K, Nitya Mehra, Raj Nidimoru
Actors - Various.

At the end of the year watch one more time how 2020 was different than rest of the years. 5 beautiful stories about 2020 corona times. First one is about a germ freak who is scared and living in isolation in 2030 because the virus still there! Second is about an executive who wants to commit suicide, third is about daily wage laborer who has lost his job but has found a place to live, 4th a beautiful story of 2 ladies one in her 20s and the other in her 60s who find something common and come closer to share their lives during lockdown, and last and the most beautiful is the poetry weaved by Ratna Pathak and Shardul Bharadwaj. A story of a senior citizen living alone and a rickshaw driver who is missing his family during lockdown. The distrust turns into trust and then more, oh what a beautifully presented story, if you eyes are not moist after this go get your heart checked maybe you lost it somewhere. Great directors and writers and actors come together to give us these 5 stories in unpaused - A must watch.

5. LOOTCASE

What I remember - Out and out comedy. Slapstick, nonsensical with a good plot and situational humor. Each and every character well developed to deliver the laugh.

FROM THE FILES -

LOOTCASE- 4.5 STARS. (G)

Director: Rajesh Krishnan
Writers: Rajesh Krishnan, Kapil Sawant
Stars: Kunal Khemu, Rasika Dugal, Gajraj Rao

Finally a comedy that actually is just comedy, pure and simple comedy. Every character is hilarious and has a 'thing' about them. Every character is just outright funny within themselves. Probably Kunal Khemu is the least funny character and the movie is all about him. The cast is also awesome and every one has been used the best way possible. Great direction and acting.

Movie is about how a common man finds a bag filled with money and obviously gets embroiled in a lot of mess. As I think of it, Kunal Khemu's wife and kid have there lines that are hilarious. Enter the gangster obsessed with National Geographic is hilarious, the cop is awesome. The politician has his own little quirks. Just out and out funny comedy. A must watch.

6. MEE RAQSAM

What I remember - A movie is pretty good if it moves you to tears. Beautiful story of Dad and Daughter, all they want to do is Dance. who will have a problem with that? Apparently the entire world!

MEE RAQSAM - 4.5 STARS. (G)

Mee Raqsam - Trailer

Director: Baba Azmi
Writers: Husain Mir, Safdar Mir
Stars: Juhaina Ahsan, Shivangi Gautam, Danish Husain

What a beautiful Slap on Religion, Culture, and Tribalism. A beautiful poetry simply told and still packs a punch. Baba Azmi we want more from you what a great movie, it is bold with an explosive end and still never leaving it's basic trait of being unassuming.

Story is about a Muslim girl who loves "hindu" dance of Bharatnatyam, needless to say that is enough for the entire humanity to revolt. I have seen a lot of Dad Daughter relationships in movies, but this one is probably up there at the top. What a Dad she got, I want to be that to my kids. He is rock steady and just obstinate about getting what her Daughter wants. It is just a dance! but it is not just a dance for the world. Society has a big ego and naturally it gets hurt because it is so big you can't carry it around without getting mad. But within our society we have people who don't carry extra baggage they are happy to help whoever is in front of them. A must watch.

7. CHINTU KA BIRTHDAY

What I remember - The creativity of the situation was mind blowing! Based in Iraq when US has attacked, and the movie is not even about Iraq war or US or politics. It is about Chintu's Bday and how we all need a Birthday party, we could be a soldier or a 10 year old or a Dad.

CHINTU KA BIRTHDAY - 4.5 STARS. (PG)

Chintu Ka Birthday Trailer

Directors: Devanshu Singh, Satyanshu Singh (co-director)

Writers: Devanshu Singh, Satyanshu Singh

Stars: Vinay Pathak, Tillotama Shome, Seema Bhargava

How do they think of a movie like this? I am just blown away by it. US has attacked Iraq and all Indian families have fled the place except one, they are trapped and stuck. It is Chintu's family and it's his Birthday. Somehow he never gets to celebrate his Birthday worls issues end up spoiling his party. Another Dad that I adore, decides no matter what he is going to give chintu his Birthday. A US Soldier is stuck just like Chintu in a war he doesn't understand. Everyone is stuck in this world not at all pleased with why it is like it is. A little bit of love and a lot of toughness washes away as we all are just plain vulnerable humans with coating of Country, Religion, Identity that has nothing to do with us. Another beautiful simple movie that Punches above it's weight. Watch it.

8. SHUBH MANGAL ZYADA SAAVDHAN

What I remember - Lots of comedy and romance between a Gay couple and the couple being a gay is not even a shocker anymore. It is weaved so well in the story that it is not even the main story.

FROM THE FILES -

SHUBH MANGAL ZYADA SAAVDHAN - 4.0 STARS. PG13. (LOVE STORY)

Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan Poster

Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan - Trailer

Director: Hitesh Kewalya
Writer: Hitesh Kewalya
Stars: Ayushmann Khurrana, Jitendra Kumar, Gajraj Rao

Finally Indian movies are moving from the phase 'look we are making movies on gay people' and ' you know what gay is?' to a movie that has gay characters. This movie makes that leap into showing a couple who is gay with no introduction, pretty good leap. Movie has a lot of good comedy too but I think  it has lot of progressive learnings without being didactic. Well presented.

9. GINNY WEDS SUNNY

What I remember - If it was my personal list I would include more off beat cinema, but I select this one for more a mass appeal. Easy going throw back love story, you don't see these often anymore.

GINNY WEDS SUNNY - 4.0 Stars. (G)

Director: Puneet Khanna
Stars: Yami Gautam, Vikrant Massey, Ayesha Raza

Ginny Weds Sunny - Trailer

Remember those yash chopra days? Those Karan Johar movies? Big Musical Love Stories those are the source of something that got called 'Bollywood Movie'. When you say "Bollywood" that's what you mean, that's why when you ask people to watch a hindi movie, they are thinking of Karan Johar movie. Well here it is, Ginny and Sunny take you back to that golden era of Bollywood. A big musical Love story with drama, comedy, romance and everything in between. The surprise is they also made it work, after many years I see a movie that could actually make the formula work! Yami and Vikrant fit the role perfectly. Enjoy it, but don't expect a lot.

10. BAAGHI 3 / MARJAAVAAN

What I remember - Both are similar, you can pick one - if you like Tiger go with Baaghi and if you like Siddarth Malhotra then go with Marjaavaan. Both old school action thriller with one liners and over the top emotion and action. Mindless and pure for the heart.

BAAGHI 3 - 4.0 STARS. PG. (THRILLER)

Baaghi 3 Poster

Baaghi 3 - Trailer

Director: Ahmed Khan
Writers: Tasha Bhambra, Sparsh Khetarpal
Stars: Tiger Shroff, Riteish Deshmukh, Shraddha Kapoor

This blogger is not a fan of James Bond-ish extravagant thrillers, but I got to admit I liked the entire thing. Everything was unapologetic and outlandish and also well done.  I love stupid one liners and this one's got a lot. The action is awesome. Action + One Liners = Hit. Who cares about plot, I even forgot what it was about. Oh yea... Tiger की सटक जाती है जब उसके भाई पे बात आती है. The action is very fresh and obviously over the top. Watch it.

MARJAAVAAN: 4.0 STARS. (LOVE STORY)

Marjaavaan Poster

Director: Milap Zaveri
Stars: Riteish Deshmukh, Sidharth Malhotra, Tara Sutaria

If you want to go old school, go old school... पूरी शिद्दत से। ... Gulshan Kumar is a name who knows how to go old school. This is the best ode to old school Heart break, Love story, Action, AND Dialogue-baaji.... uff. Cheap front bencher thrilling dialogue-baaji... just watch the trailer, it is full of one liners... I loved it. No it has nothing new,but it is done with lot of love for old school movies, not a spoof but make one more with full honesty. में मरूंगा मर जाएगा दोबारा जनम लेने से डर जायेगा. If that makes you smile go watch it. The movie also reminds me of the Manmohan Desai era of movies that always were based on communal harmony brotherhood and it used to always show minority culture's beauty. Amar Akbar Anthony, we would lovingly watch Anthony' speaking tuti futi hindi to father of the church, we loved shayari of Akbar. We loved coolie's Iqbal as our leader going hadtaaal! and singing ... mubarak ho tum sab ko haj ka mahina na thee meri kismat ke dekh madina! We as a nation have come to hate a lot.
Siddarth Malhotra has found his niche, he is going to make one face of heartbroken young man.... the best impersonation he can do of Deewar ka Bachchan and not do anything else. He has found it and I like it. Watch it, clap and whistle and have fun.

Notable mentions - If you are for offbeat cinema go for Yeh Ballet and Love Sonia.

2020 was also exceptional because it got 2 "Negative 1" review movies. First time a year has got that. Well, it has been that kind of year, maybe it me getting old or the movies testing my patience. I carefully give "0" to a movie thinking things can't go worse! But then comes along a path breaking cinema that makes me wonder.... well if I gave zero to that what do I do with this!! So I had to break the meaning of 0 to 5 rating and give a "Negative 1".

The 2 movies that Qualified for the 2 worst reviews are -

1. DABBANG 3 - Sallu at his worst.
2. COOLIE NO. 1 - David Dhawan is a Number Zero

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TOP 3 WEB SERIES OF 2020

1.PAATAL LOK

What I remember - Middle aged Police officer who has not much to look forward to, teams with a Junior who has path to grow but is not from the preferred religion. They work on a mission way out of their league, shades of Khaaki (the movie). There is also this lunatic villain which is pretty interesting.

FROM THE FILES -

PAATAL LOK - MUST WATCH

Paatal Lok Poster

Paatal Lok - Trailer

Creator: Sudip Sharma
Stars: Jaideep Ahlawat, Neeraj Kabi, Abhishek Banerjee

I heard this is a Anushka Sharma Production, it seems like whatever Anushka touches becomes awesome. I sometimes wonder what did she see in Virat? Uncouth foul mouthed superstar, she on the other hand is beacon of liberal values and pushing boundaries of liberal dialogue alive in a country like India in 2020!
The show follows a case that a cop has been given. Unlike other web series where the protagonist cops are cool and smart, our cop is a regular employee who is as real as a character from Panchayat. There are Lot of similarities to Khakee an awesome Bachchan movie where he plays a upright cop defeated by system who is looking for one case one last hurrah to make it all worth it. Paatal Lok develops each and every character, their are no cardboard cliche characters. All the criminals nabbed before they could complete mission of killing a high profile TV journalist have very real lives well developed and beautifully portrayed. So is the Journalist and his wife. There are some unforgettable scenes of how subtle racism affects everything, the way minorities are treated.

Anyway this is a show that comes once in a blue moon and just mesmerizes you, don't expect a thriller or suspense though it has both but that is not what it is about. Jaideep Ahlawat, Ishwak Singh has just knocked it out of the park with a brilliant portrayal of a frustrated Cop and his assistant Junior Cop albeit Muslim.

2. PANCHAYAT

What I remember - Throw back 90s / 80s series a city boy comes to village for his first Job. The treatment of the show is so laid back and the problems are so umm..... villagish...

FROM THE FILES -

PANCHAYAT - MUST WATCH

Panchayat Poster

Panchayat - Trailer

Stars: Jitendra Kumar, Raghuvir Yadav, Chandan Roy

If you are old enough to remember Nukkad and Hum Log TV serials of 80s? It is from the similar treatment that Panchayat is born. I can't believe someone had the courage and imagination and skill to make it. A classic sit back relax and enjoy the ride TV series of yore. No American web series stress of complication, no shocking twists every minute or at end of each episode begging you to watch the next. No greed to compete with the last series. Just plain simple story of a city youth who is forced to do a job in Village Panchayat. Set up of a village could have a lot of pitfalls in narration like looking down or looking up on Village life etc... none of that. The characters are real and they remain in character from the first to last episode. Just pure gold.

 3.0 AFSOS

What I remember - Great Villain is my biggest memory. The regret of our hero is that he can't die, and regret of our villain is that she can't kill.

AFSOS - 5.0 STARS. (R) - TV SERIES.

Director -
Anubhuti Kashyap

Stars: Gulshan Devaiah, Anjali Patil, Heeba Shah

I won't say it is perfect but it is near perfect. It is crazy creative, whacky, weird, and funny. I was so enthralled by it that first time in my life I understood why people binge watch something, I wanted to go on and on. Director Anubhuti whoever she is, NOW she is someone, and when I googled her she seems to be Anurag Kashyap's sibling. Anyway ... Anubhuti you are awesome.

Afsos is a series about a man who wants to die, and tries to commit suicide but is unsuccessful. He has 'afsos' he can't die, there are others in the story that have afsos of their own and this comedy turns, thriller, turns murder mystery, turns whacky and weird in no time. Best thing I watched for sometime.
