Q3 2022 - Biggies are Back

POPULAR BOLLYWOOD

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

VIKRAM VEDHA: 3.5 Stars. PG.

Vikram Vedha - Trailer

Directed by - Pushkar–Gayathri

Starring - Saif Ali Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Radhika Apte, Rohit Saraf, Yogita Bihani

The Story - A la Vikram Betal stories. Vikram is tasked to capture a criminal Vedha, but whenever he catches him, Vedha tells him a story and gets away. All typical south Indian movie clicehs galore but the taut script and high voltage action keeps it entertaining. Last 30 mins have enough twists for you to start thinking hmm... the movie is not that bad!

The Characters - Hritik has aced the superstar look. He has a mesmerizing screen presence and his modern day bachchan-esque presence works. He knows where to pause and how to swag. Saif has his patented confused look on his face and you feel he can do better. Others fill the space pretty well.

Verdict - Yes it just came out and yes I saw it. Don't be surprised I watch all movies First Tuesday, Last show. This is a scene to scene copy of a South Indian blockbuster. It has all the ingredients of South movie. I have started to wonder if South movies will ever progress. Again I will ask - How much testosterone is too much testosterone? The only thing different was - thankfully there was no Item song or love interest for Vikram. There was a south patented slap to show love. There was over the top action. A very fast paced badly done Dance (and they had Hritik at their disposal). For North - movies are entertainment for south - they are Religion. Like all religions, the followers don't want to change anything and hence these movies are stuck in machoism and misogyny of 80s. Don't get me wrong it is good nice action thriller but come on guys take some baby steps towards progress.

BRAHMASTRA: 3.5 Stars. G.

Brahmastra - Trailer

Directed by - Ayan Mukerji

Starring - Amitabh Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Mouni Roy, Nagarjuna Akkineni

The Story - The First Marvel-ish Bollywood version of superhero trilogy. Story is very dense, and surprisingly all the Hindi movie buffs are asking for more? When was the last time a Hindi movie had such a long story that needed 15 minutes in second half just to narrate the entire story? I will prescribe Dabbang, Race, Golmaal and many other 3-4 movie franchises to whoever complains about story of this one. Story is simply about a lot of make believe 'astras' and biggest one being 'Brahmastra'. Obviously whoever has it, wins all the marbles. A la-Avengers kind of theme but with Indian superstars. We already have 3 planned and if done right I guess there could be a lot more. This is a big canvas and you can keep painting whatever you want. Finally Bollywood realizes how to keep extending one story forever Hollywood style.

The Characters - Cameos from superstars like SRK, Bachchan and Nagarjuna lends it a tag of a Big Movie along with all the special effects. Ranbir and Alia surprisingly look bored mouthing dialogues like they are reading from a white board held in front of them. I will blame it on the pandemic. The teaser on who will be starring in the next sequel bodes well for this franchise. It may not be at the level of Bahubali that created the buzz with - Why did Katappa kill Bahubali. But still it does keep you interested.

The Verdict - I hear that after solving all problems, now a days Indian government is into movie business. Indian right wing has now put all their ego on trying to make sure all movies are a flop. Well this one slipped by. It is pretty entertaining including all it's shortcomings. Negatives are Alia and Ranbir's acting. Positive is lot of masala in the script. The movie starts as a zero starrer with cliches after cliches on how Ranbir is poor falling for a rich girl and feeds orphans and guess what, he is an orphan too!! and I was like oh god save me... but thankfully Astra Gundi Mouni Roy came in and movie took a turn for the better. Next time, add more one liners and comedy and this is going to go on and on.

SHAMSHERA: 2.5 Stars. G.

Shamshera - Trailer

Directed by - Karan Malhotra

Starring - Ranbir Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Vaani Kapoor

The Story - As is the need of the times is you have to create a fantasy with British as the villain. It works for everyone. फैंटसी की फैंटसी हो गयी रियलिटी की रियलिटी। They packed everything in it again trying to copy the Bahubali / RRR model, low caste vs British, India Vs British, Poor Vs Rich, Bad Vs Good. All stuffed in this masala filled entertainer. Story is about a freedom fighter 'shamshera' who will right all wrongs and give freedom to his people by stealing from the British. This long drawn affair is a little too old school but it's not boring.

The Characters - This Ranbir is better than the Brahmastra Ranbir. He is trying to work with whatever he has, his getups are good and he has good horse ride and action scenes to show off. Sanjay Dutt has now overdone his Khalnayak, Agneepath-2 crazy man thing. Like Aamir needs to stop with PK, Sanjay needs to stop with the crazy guy eye popped out look. Vaani has not much to do but does it well though she does not look like one of the low caste poor girl, but hey! It's commercial Bollywood our female lead needs to still look a certain way .. right?

The Verdict - Not as bad as I thought it to be. The Music is a huge plus, the treatment is grand and feels like a huge fantasy period drama. Looks top class expensive movie but same old theme may have gotten a little old. You can watch it with a fast forward button.

LAAL SINGH CHADDHA: 4.0 Stars. G

Laal Singh Chaddha - Trailer

Directed by - Advait Chandan

Starring - Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Naga Chaitanya, Mona Singh

The Story - Everyone and their grandma know about the story. It's an Indian adaptation of Forrest Gump. Contrary to everyone's expectations it has been done well. It works through Indian history from 1980s to 2020s. Yes, it is a drag and many events are pushed into the script but they did the best they could. Laal Singh our Forrest is a dim witted kid who grows up through Emergency, PMs murder, Riots, to Kargil War to present day. We never know what ails Laal but all we know is he is 'slow'. He keeps going at it and succeeds in life. Pretty uplifting eh? Nope, it also is pretty sad.

The Characters - The biggest negative and positive is Aamir. As mentioned earlier his PK and Dhoom high eye brow look needs to be put in cold storage. That itself brought the movie down a notch. every time he did that it took something out of the movie. Well, Aamir Khan also makes mistakes and he did not realize he should have played the young Aamir a little toned down. Another huge negative is worst punjabi ever spoken in a movie (By Aamir). I think they did it to make him look 'slow'? I don't know but that was a horrible effort at speaking Punjabi. Positives are the 'Sikh' Aamir in second half, the guy makes you cry and cry more, he was in form in second half! Kareena was pretty good in most scenes, it was weird to see her in a movie after so long but did a pretty good job. Naga as Bubba was handed the most difficult part of the movie and he did a good job but the character itself did not work in this version.

The Verdict - So why would I give it a 4 star? Good question. I would actually give it a 3.5 stars but I am still listening on a daily basis to the songs. This has not happened for years, so it does deserve an extra half star. Do me a favor Click here and if you don't like it. Don't talk to me again.

EK VILLAIN RETURNS: 3.25 Stars. PG.

Ek Villain Returns

Directed by - Mohit Suri

Starring - John Abraham, Arjun Kapoor, Disha Patani, Tara Sutaria

The Story - The first one probably was a tab bit better. A villain in form of a serial killer is out there killing girls who ditched their BFs. Who is it? An edge of the seat thriller! ... well I just wanted to say that, it's not exactly 'edge of the seat' but its still an 'eating papad and enjoying the serial killer mystery' that is more apt description.

The Characters - This is a historic ensemble of the greatest non actors in one movie. I mean you are talking about Mr Arjun Kapoor who peaked in his first film, to be honest he threw everything at his role and we commend him for his effort. This blog is a big fan of Mr Great John 'non-acting' Abraham, he has mastered the "look" the sad, depressed look. He looks straight at the camera with a blank face, with no expression, somehow it works for him. Then we have Disha Patani who somehow is the best actor on paper in this movie. Tara is a historically great non actor we have known for sometime. When you throw all of them in one movie you would expect a horror show but that is the greatness of movie making. No matter how much you try sometimes the product does not turn out to be bad and vice versa.

The Verdict - The script has ridiculous twists and turns it never stops giving. Villain keeps changing hands and we end up with a good tight impossible script. Try it ... you may like it.

HIT: THE FIRST CASE: 3.0 Stars. PG.

HIT- The First Case - Trailer

Directed by - Sailesh Kolanu

Starring - Rajkummar Rao, Sanya Malhotra

The Story - The heart is at the right place and the movie has a good script. But sometimes things just don't gel together. A decent attempt at a taut thriller but something is amiss. Hero is sad from his past, he is solving a serial killer mystery of teen girls. The problem is we do not have suspects and something to look forward to. Not a bad effort though.

The Characters - Rajkummar Rao tries his best to look the Sad, Angry detective but this time the talented actor can't pull through. Relying on too many gimmicks, suffering from PTSD, chain smoking and being fired from job. All clichés about a sad angry detective. Sanya another brilliant actor also looks pale shadow of herself and can't add much.

The Verdict - Sadly the first case may be the last in this franchise. Watch it for the good script (I think it is copied) and it does work on and off. I am a little tired of serial killers killing kids and teen girls. This has become another cliche that needs to stop.

BHOOL BHULAIYA 2: 2.0 Stars. PG.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa - 2

Directed by Anees Bazmee

Starring - Tabu, Kartik Aaryan, Kiara Advani

The Story - A ghost story that has comedy and some bhoot type stuff. Not my type of movie but I am trying to judge it without bias. Nah! Forget it. If I don't have a bias what it even means to review a movie? Kartik Aryan another great 'non actor' of bollywood comes to town with his GF Kiara Advani (wasted in another movie), town is possessed with Bhoot (you think obviously Tabu, who else can be a Bhoot. Don't be so sure). Wait a minute there are twists and turns and some comedy. Not that I find it funny.

The Characters - This Kartik Aaryan guy has perfected the look of non-showered dirty half shaven guy AND that's all. THAT is his selling point. There are lot of attempts at comedy and yes there is Tabu who looks spooky all the time and scares you. I am not sure what I will do if I meet her, will I just run away from her?

The Verdict - I did watch it, did not get mad so that's a positive.

CHUP: 1.5 Stars. PG13

Chup - Trailer

Directed by - R. Balki

Starring - Sunny Deol, Dulquer Salmaan, Shreya Dhanwanthary, Pooja Bhatt

The Story - Believe it or not it is a serial killer season. Another serial killer is on the lose, the only creative difference is - he kills Film reviewers! There ends all creativity for this film. Story is boring and bland, from first scene we know the killer, so there goes the suspense. There is not much of thriller part either when you have a non yelling Sunny Deol.

The Characters - Dulquer Salmaan tries his best but falls short of looking the part. The best part of the movie is Shreya, she is the savior and carries the movie. Good job Shreya! Pooja Bhatt makes a return and is the reason for the only funny moment in the movie. Good Job Pooja. Then there is Mr Sunny Papaji, let me ask you a question. When you think Sunny what do you think? Yes! Exactly... an angry Sunny running into an army of people. If you are not going to make him do that what are you expecting? He will act? His facial muscles will change? Your fault Balki.

The Verdict - Not only is the movie boring and predictable, what grates on your nerves is the undercurrent of greatness that the Maker (Balki) has about himself. It was pretty clear he has bought into this whole idea that mentally disturbed people are art geniuses. No Mr Balki Artist like other people can also be mentally disturbed. Let's get this straight - someone committing suicide is not because of their artistic genius it is because they were sick and they could not get help. DONT blame it on the world! We already got an entire nation taken for a ride on suicides of actors. There are suicides out of compulsion but that is not an artistic problem that is a farmer problem. I guarantee people like Mr Balki would never care about Kaagaz ke Phool if Guru Dutt did not commit suicide. Enough of my rant, watch it if you want to understand what I am talking about. Don't watch it if you want to watch a suspence thriller.

CUTTPUTLLI: 2.0 Stars. R.

Cuttputli - Trailer

Directed by - Ranjit M. Tewari

Starring - Akshay Kumar

The Story - You want another Serial killer? No? OK. Here you go. Another serial killer dud for you. At least this one does have an illusive killer but guess what he also is killing teen girls. Where are all these people getting these scripts? I am pretty sure all these serial killer movies are copied.

The Characters - Akshay at this point probably gets out of the bed and start mouthing dialogues, he doesn't even need to wake up. Didn't he say he no more wants to work for money? Please Akshay if this is what you got when you do your job for creative satisfaction, please go back to working for money.

The Verdict - Movie has a good story, probably stolen. But the killer is too illusive and still we kind of guess it during the movie. The movie also has the oft repeated sexual abuse situation in a movie. The more hindi movies show sexual abuse, more it seems to become normalized.

SAMRAAT PRITHVIRAJ: 0 Stars. PG.

Samraat Prithviraj - Trailer

Directed by - Chandraprakash Dwivedi

Starring - Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Sonu Sood, Manushi Chhillar

The Story - Akshay had more free time so he did one more great Hindu king historical. It's a safe bet now a days, no not a safe bet if you show real facts. It is safe if you make a superhero movie passing it as a historical. I am sure Prithviraj Chauhan was a great ruler and must have a great reign. If you think you will learn anything from this movie, you are wrong.

The Characters - Just like Akshay, Sanjay needs a long break. It's ok to take a break relax and chill. Just don't do movies. Comeback refreshed we all like some version of you, but not this one.

The Verdict - A lot of money wasted in making a fantasy. Nothing works even the fantasy falls flat. Akshay romancing a 20 year old is cringe but there are many cringe moments in this historical.

BUDGET MOVIES

--------------------------------------------------------

JOGI: 4.0 Stars. PG13

Jogi - Trailer

Directed by - Ali Abbas Zafar

Starring - Diljit Dosanjh, Amyra Dastur

The Story - Based on the 1984 Anti-Sikh riots post Indira Gandhi's death. The movie manages to disturb you as the movie shows one riot, but shows how all riots are similar. They all have a minority in line of fire. What it is to be sitting ducks waiting to be slaughtered by mobs. Not angry mobs but politically motivated hate mobs. That is the key, these riots are all planned and created but it always looks like it was a spur of the moment angry people. I was a kid when I saw people looting shops of neighborhood uncle, till yesterday he was our uncle today even kids were looting his shop. Obviously we know that, Humans are not very good people. The story is about Jogi who has taken upon himself to save his neighbors from marauding blood thirsty government machine.

The Characters - Diljit gives in a strong performance, he has limitations as an actor but he does the best he can do. He is definitely inspired to do this movie and it shows.

The Verdict - An organized crime shown the way it is. Watch it and get a little disturbed, it is sometimes good for you.

NIKAMMA: 2.5 Stars. G.

Nikamma - Trailer

Directed by - Sabbir Khan

Starring - Abhimanyu Dassani, Shirley Setia, Shilpa Shetty

The Story - This Nikamma kid suddenly becomes useful hunk who can beat up all the bad guys in the town. He lives with his family especially his brother and his bhabhi. He has a special love-hate relationship with his Bhabhi and in the end they need to be a family to win. It is kind of a unique story but it could have been done better.

The Characters - Abhimanyu who this blogger likes a lot, mostly due to his choice of unique cinema does not disappoint in his choice but does disappoint in his growth. His acting limitations have started to show and he needs some work on it. Shirley Setia is not an actor, she is a you-tuber who got a role in this movie for reasons unknown. She pulls the entire movie down due to her wanted skills, though not her fault. Shilpa Shetty is still hell bent on proving she will never age, but in the process she is almost plastic doll who will never look or act real. Come on Shilpa it's ok to look real and just let your hair down and get down to dirty business of acting.

The Verdict - Could have, would have, but was not. The one liners and some action sequences were good but overall we all knew what's coming and going through the motions.

SHABAASH MITHU: 2.5 Stars. G.

Shabaash Mithu - Trailer

Directed by - Srijit Mukherji

Starring - Taapsee Pannu

The Story - Story of the greatest female cricketer - Mithali Raj. Another sports movie that does not work. All sport movies follow a predictive pattern and they become boring. Do we have to tell story of every great sports person? They all look same after a while. Mithali had a to fight for respect of women's cricket in India as well as fight for her own place in the team along with fighting with her family. When you are a woman you double your fights to get anywhere, somehow the story did not have hooks to keep you glued.

The Characters - Taapsee who is one of the finest actors we have, has been churning out movies like Akshay Kumar. Both look jaded and tired in their movies and both need a break. This feels like 100th Sports movie for Taapsee and she needs to stop.

The Verdict - Give it a try with a fast forward button. There are moments and at least you learn something about the greatest women cricketer of our times.

DARLINGS: 3.5 Stars. PG.

Darlings - Trailer

Directed by - Jasmeet K. Reen

Starring - Alia Bhatt, Shefali Shah, Vijay Varma, Kiran Karmarkar, Roshan Mathew

The Story - A story of an abusive husband is old, but the treatment is fresh. With a backdrop of economically backward class along with being muslim and saddled with an abusive husband, mom daughter duo have their hands full. They fantasize unique ways of getting rid of the problem and try to implement a few sometimes quite hilariously. A true dark comedy that sometimes is funny and sometimes it goes dark.

The Characters - Alia plays the wife who loves an abusive husband and has differences with her loving Mother. Sounds counterintuitive but that's life. The Mom-Daughter duo of Shefali and Alia put together a great 'jugalbandi' of probably first female dark comedy of our times. A shout out to Vijay Verma who underplays his role to perfection. He brings in the complexity of his life of a minority member frustrated with outside world and is abusive and loving to his wife.

The Verdict - All 3 brilliant performers make it a good watch. It does drag a bit in bits and pieces but overall the freshness of the story and quirky treatment of scenes keeps it afloat.

JAADUGAR (LOVE GOALS): 2.5 Stars.

Jaadugar - Trailer

Directed by - Sameer Saxena

Starring - Jitendra Kumar, Arushi Sharma, Javed Jaffrey

The Story - A beautiful story of small town soccer team who wants to win a town championship in honor of the deceased former captain. Brother of the deceased captain has emotional attachment to winning a trophy but the son has no interest in soccer his love of being a magician clashes with love of his life who is daughter of a magician too. Too much complication? Not really, it is a simple story as all Jitendra Kumar movies are.

The Characters - Javed Jaffrey plays this soccer game to perfection. He has a meaty character and he gives it a honest effort. You feel for him and you laugh at him at the same time. Jitendra Kumar shows his limitations as an actor. He is tailor made for 'Panchayat' but when it comes to playing a lover boy he does not develop the presence on the screen to make magic happen. Arushi fits her character very well and gives a great performance.

The Verdict - You want this movie to succeed, it entertains in bits and pieces but cannot keep your interest alive for long stretches. Surprisingly it's biggest asset 'Jitendra Kumar' is the biggest drag. Soccer team is hilarious and Javed Jaffrey does great but the magic bit and the love story does not evoke the emotions.

WEB SERIES

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NEVER HAVE I EVER: 5 Stars. PG.

Never Have I Ever - Trailer

Created by - Mindy Kaling, Lang Fisher

Starring - Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Poorna Jagannathan, Richa Moorjani, Darren Barnet, Jaren Lewison, John McEnroe, Lee Rodriguez, Ramona Young

The Story - Story of an Indian Teen growing up through High School. I love high school dramas, this is very American and yes it is in English and yes it doesn't need to be in this blog. But guess what! It is my blog so I will do whatever I want. AND I love 'Never Have I Ever'. I laughed and cried the most I have in any show. We all are 'Devi' and we all have the insecurities of a teen, come on just because you have grown old physically you think you have grown mentally too? Give me a break.

The Characters - I love every character in the show, from Devi who can do everything wrong and be like what! me!? I love the Indian grandma who admits she does golu only to outdo other women, I love the Indian American professor scared of her. I specially love Fabiola, her wide eyed expression. I love Ben and Paxson. Well you get the point. ok few more loves - I love John Mc Enroe's narration that is priceless and Devi remembering her Dad makes me tear up. OK now I am done.

The Verdict - Don't watch it. Don't come back telling me how it was not worth it because I might kill you.

PANCHAYAT-2: 5 Stars. G.

Directed by - Deepak Kumar Mishra

Starring - Jitendra Kumar, Raghubir Yadav, Neena Gupta, Chandan Roy, Faisal Malik

Panchayat-2 - Trailer

The Story - Another series that I absolutely love and I have not yet met a person who does not. Season 2 is still fun and still a must watch. A city boy is stuck in a village trying his best to prepare for exams so he can get out. But that does not stop him from getting sucked into everything village throws at him.

The Characters - Raghuvir and Neena are made for this. What great actors these guys are!. Then there are those office assistants. Chandan Roy what an actor. I am blown away.

The Verdict - Obviously you watched it and liked it. If not - go to hell.

INDIAN MATCHMAKING-2: 1.0 Stars.

Indian Matchmaking - Trailer

Created By - Smriti Mundhra

Presented By - Sima Taparia

The Story - First season was breath of fresh air. Even though Indians did not like to see who they really are but it was entertaining and hilarious. Season second - is exactly the same air rebottled and served with zero respect for consumers.

The Characters - Sima Aunty looks tired with same old tired lines. Everyone from first season look more made up and mouthing scripted lines. New people have no stories to tell. This one went down fast.

The Verdict - Don't waste your time.

Lot of Typical Bollywood in Q2 2022 Hindi Movie Reviews

                                             POPULAR BOLLYWOOD

           -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JUGJUGG JEEYO: 3.5 Stars. G.

JugJugg Jeeyo - Trailer

Directed by: Raj Mehta

Starring: Neetu Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Kiara Advani

The Story - A typical Bollywood Movie but with some unexpected twists to it. A nice couple of love stories with plenty of drama. If you were missing one of those shaadi waali bollywood movies. This is the one for you.

The Characters - Anil Kapoor is suddenly in every movie, he looks good and he was always a great actor and knows what it takes to elevate a 'bollywood masala movie'. He carries this film on his shoulders for good or the bad. Kiara is always good though she does look more comfortable in non glam scenes. Varun Dhawan is ok in the movie and probably a weak link.

The Verdict - Go watch it. Nothing like a good Bollywood masala, drama, emotion, comedy and dances.

JAYESHBHAI JORDAAR: 4.0 Stars. PG13

Jayeshbhai Jordaar - Trailer

Directed by Divyang Thakkar

Starring: Ranveer Singh, Shalini Pandey, Ratna Pathak Shah, Boman Irani

The Story - Jayesh Bhai is no Jordaar, he can't speak a word against society or his Dad as he sees his daughters being killed in the womb. Until Jayeshbhai tries to be Jordaar, instead he whimpers hilariously through the movie trying to be Jordaar but he has his other daughter and some big burly men who could never get married to support him.

The Characters - Ranveer is a great actor and a superstar and it speaks volumes of his confidence and how secure he is when he does films like this one. Shalini has a one dimension role, Ratna Pathak is annoyingly good supporting the patriarchal horror going on around her. Boman Irani is villanous comic who actually is good after a long time.

The Verdict - A film with a low budget feel with a collossal star like Ranveer! A great movie staying within framework or a entertainer and strictly bollywood, and still manages to pack a hard Punch in your gut about what is casually done and accepted in India in name a culture. A great balancing act!

RUNWAY 34: 1.0 Stars. (G)

Runway 34 - Trailer

Directed by Ajay Devgn

Starring: Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn, Rakul Preet Singh, Boman Irani

The Story - A legendary Pilot lands a plane to safety under impossible odds, but still he has to undergo scrutiny of aviation authorities. Facts and drama in unearthed as Pilot fights the court room drama to save his career.

The Characters - When you think Ajay Devgn cannot fall more, he digs a hole and falls some more. He is living in an era of chain smoking, putting on shades, and trying to look cool as if he is playing a 90s Hero. There is nothing like a pilot in that role. The moment it is a Ajay Devgn productions the movie is going to be bad, that is a sad fact. Amitabh at this age can sleep walk through a role and we should be fine with it. Boman is bad at playing a very typical airline boss. The only actor who is trying to put some effort is Rakul Preet Singh but she has a very confusing half baked role at her disposal.

The Verdict - Horrible special effects. Everything looks fake in all Devgn movies, I don't know why. Maybe he has found a way to make super cheap movies which even when flop are hits like what Mithun Da did in 80s/90s. Don't watch it.

BHOOL BHULAIYAA 2: 3.0 Stars. (PG)

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 - Trailer

Directed by Anees Bazmee

Starring: Tabu, Kartik Aaryan, Kiara Advani

The Story - It is second edition with Kartik Aryan replacing Akshay Kumar. A regular bhoot type movie with a comic touch. Story is about a bhoot trapped for years in a room of a haveli who is related to allt he characters of the family. The daughter returns with a boy friend and bhoot is out and the fun begins.

The Characters - Kartik Aryan is a non-acting Star. He has same 'not taken a shower' shabby cool dude look in every movie no matter who he plays. He also does not know how to act. Kiara Advani is also nothing great in this one, obviously when you have old timers like Anees Bazmi still trying to make movies how much are they going to inspire people to act? Tabu obviously carries the film as far as she can but she also can't do it after a point.

The Verdict - An insipid production which had to be made because the bhoot franchise makes money. So they will keep churning the same stuff till it is profitable. Bad comedy and slow pace keeps the movie strictly in mediocre category.

RRR: 4.0 Stars. G.

RRR - Trailer

Director: S. S. Rajamouli

Starring: N. T. Rama Rao Jr., Ram Charan, Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Shriya Saran, Samuthirakani, Ray Stevenson, Alison Doody, Olivia Morris

The Story - A fantasy setup in real British rule of India. 2 superstars come together as best friends to defy the mighty British empire. Not much of a story it is just a lot of pyrotechnics and unbelievable creative scenes and stunts. What do you expect? It's a follow up to Baahubali.

The Characters - From the looks of it, seems like NT Rama Rao and Ram Charan are 2 superstars in south and they are still running with the 80s superstar formula. As has been the case in most south Indian blockbusters the male superstars take the Oxygen out and there is not much room for any other character forget a presence of a female character. They still are relegated to some song and dance or someone who the great male actor decides to love.

The Verdict - Though this blogger is not a fan of these big South Indian blockbuster movies, but I enjoyed this one. It has all the 'don'ts' of a south movie. Too much testosterone (Check). Over the top acting (Check) Over the top physics defying macho fighting (Check) Over the top dancing (Check) No intricacies in the plot (Check). BUT inspite of all the above the movie had an awesome pace, it declared itself an out and out fantasy from scene one. It had mind boggling CGI. What I was blown away with is - every scene was a creative genius! Every action scene and every over the top gimmick was a new one. Nothing was borrowed from anywhere else it was all fresh and new. Go Watch it. ohh.. you already did!

JERSEY: 2.5 Stars. G.

Jersey - Trailer

Director: Gowtam Tinnanuri

Starring: Shahid Kapoor, Mrunal Thakur, Pankaj Kapur

The Story - A struggling cricketer wants to play for India but he just can't get the 'Jersey' for India nor he can get an Indian Jersey for his son as he falls into depression. He wants to play cricket even when people want him to coach. After a lot of melodrama we find out the truth! But it's too late in every sense of the word.

The Characters - We talked about how a Ranveer Singh is so secure that he can do a Jayeshbhai Jordaar, the opposite is Shahid Kapoor. He wants to play it safe, like Salman and others he wants to do only hit south movie remakes to make sure he gets a success. Also whenever real life relations play reel life it never works. Pankai Kapur and Shahid Kapur behave more like father-son with internal jokes than their actual characters should. Mrunal Thakur is wasted, and like all south Indian movies this one also somehow manages to point the blame to the only sane person in the movie. The wife! the female lead. Mrunal does her job very well but her role doesn't let her do much.

The Verdict - I blame it on Shyamalan! Damn you... since you gave us Sixth sense. All people do is keep us in the dark till the last scene and reveal that all we saw was a lie! Why! The movie hurtles around with this stupid cricketer not playing when in his prime and trying to play when his days are gone. Just irritates the heck out of you. Skip it.

THAR: 3.5 Stars. PG13.

Thar - Trailer

Director: Raj Singh Chaudhary

Starring: Anil Kapoor, Harshvardhan Kapoor, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Mukti Mohan

The Story - It's a hindi version of Wild Wild West. It is a pretty creative take, setup in a small town in Thar desert. A city kid comes looking for old artifacts and looks suspicious. The mystery thickens as brutal murders start popping up all over the town. An aging cop investigates with almost no force at his disposal.

The Characters - Old timers know how much this blogger loves Harshvardhan Kapoor, but this time he fell flat in carrying this one. It is sad as this was a perfect movie to emote and take the movie to a different level but he decides to underplay to the point that he is blank. I think it was too much to ask out of him. Anil Kapoor on the other hand is enjoying his second stint in acting, he is great mouthing bad words, chatting it up with his out of shape buddy, planning retirement with his wife and trying not to die. Fatima Shaikh is ok and does not have much to do.

The Verdict - It could have would have but is not. Awesome plot and great script but the pace is slow and things just don't happen quickly. I so hope it was just somehow a little more entertaining. Not a bad product. If you want to see something you haven't seen in Hindi movie, watch it.

GANGUBAI KATHIAWADI: 3.5 Stars. R

Gangubai Kathiawadi - Trailer

Directed by: Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Starring: Alia Bhatt, Shantanu Maheshwari, Vijay Raaz, Indira Tiwari, Seema Pahwa

The Story - A typical story about the rise of a prostitute as a political power, supposedly based on a real life person called Gangubai. She started as a teen and ended up ruling the red light area and hob nobbed with politicians trying to make life better for victims.

The Characters - It's an out and out Alia Bhatt movie. A subdued Sanjay leela Bhansali movie, which probably is a good thing. This is Alia's 'Agneepath', one liners and stylish acting all together in a wafer thin plot. Alia throws her best punch at it and comes up with a great performance.

The Verdict: Its a grand movie, with good music. The pace ebbs and flows but it does the job. If you are Alia's a fan watch it!

PUSHPA: 2.5 Stars. PG

Pushpa - Trailer

Directed by Sukumar

Starring: Allu Arjun, Fahadh Faasil, Rashmika Mandanna

The Story - Another typical south Indian blockbuster with the hero being a HERO. One man show. The story of a great Pushpa with all the style possible. A low level guy rises from the ashes to become a big black wood smuggler. Nothing complicated about the story.

The Characters - Allu Arjun is Pushpa and Pushpa is Allu. He is Bachchan of 80s, and Rajni of 90s. He will have mannerisms that people will copy. All the one liners are delivered with a punch etc etc. There is no room for any other soul to exist in the movie. I am too old to enjoy this old wine in new bottle but probably people did love it. Samantha has an Item number in it, and I am like why would such a bundle of talent do an item number? Then I went to one of my cricket team's party and all they put on was ... o Antava Mava .... all day long. So I guess the decision was the right one.

The Verdict - How much testosterone is too too much testosterone? That's the question. Why are these south Indian potboilers hell bent on taking us back to era of one man army with no room for others. Women as item numbers and villain supporting the one liners of our hero. Same stuff from 80s put together again with a new actor. I would skip it, it is long and endless sequence of the same thing.

ANEK: 4.5 Stars. PG13

Anek - Trailer

Directed by: Anubhav Sinha

Starring: Ayushmann Khurrana, Andrea Kevichüsa, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, J.D. Chakravarthy

The Story - aNEk is a story about insurgency in North East. A spy is in thick of it and may or may not have a major breakthrough in ending the insurgency. All this is regular stuff for all insurgencies, when like Arjun in Mahabharata, the Spy starts having doubts what the whole thing is and what this is all about!

The Characters - Ayushman is a favorite of Anubhav Sinha and he again delivers with a nice controlled performance. The Star and My Hero is the Director Mr Anubhav Sinha. I can sum up the entire movie in 4 words - I love you, Anubhav! He is easily my favorite Director of this era. The Girl does not fit as a aspiring Boxer at all but then that's a small compromise for a movie that is a thesis on all insurgencies.

The Verdict - Just like Article 15 and Thappad, Anubhav makes you sit up and think. This is a deep dive into all the troubled areas of the world. The only thing that is sure is - People are hurting. (Lekin logon ka kya sir?) rest all pieces are doing what they want to do. Governments generally are short sighted and trying to Quell and appease, the opposition is always divided into people who have different ways to attack the government and on and on it goes. The dialogues are just great! Especially - what is peace! Awesome discussion about Peace. Watch it, if you want to learn something.

HEROPANTI 2: 1.0 Stars. G.

Heropanti 2 - Trailer

Directed by: Ahmed Khan

Starring: Tiger Shroff, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Tara Sutaria

The Story - I don't know. Tiger is a software geek? then he hacks into various systems for the Villain Nawazzuddin because he is brother of his Girl friend? Whatever who cares! The movie has some action scenes and yea... I think I forwarded most of it.

The Characters - I don't like to trash people, but come on Tara please don't sign for these movies and don't act like you have no clue. Nawazuddin tries to play the Joker as a villain. Tiger needs to find better projects to be part of. He is a star and he can be an Okay actor, if he gets a good director. Come on guys!

The Verdict - umm... I watched it, so you don't have to!

                                                 BUDGET MOVIES
   ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

INDIA SWEET AND SPICES: 4.0 Stars. G

India Sweet and Spices - Trailer

Directed by: Geeta Malik

Starring: Sophia Ali, Manisha Koirala, Rish Shah, Adil Hussain

The Story - Set in US immigrant community of rich successful Indians. Story of a family's internal struggles and growing and learnings from their past and present. It is a typical cross over immigrant movie the kind that exploded a few years ago but are now seen only once in a while.

The Characters - I being an immigrant and relatively living in similar life styles enjoyed it thoroughly. A little over the top depiction of the Uncle and Aunties was necessary to bring the comic side of it. How Indians are so typical competitive and jealous but still want to hang out with each other. How kids hate it but still want the rich lifestyle that they gamely hang around. How no matter what generation you are - you are lying to yourself. Manisha does a great job of acting, actually I was surprised at her acting skills! Sophia was pretty good too and carried the movie with effortless ease.

The Verdict - I laughed out loud at many scenes only because I know I have seen Uncle and Aunty like me do it. It's a great one if you don't judge it too much. A good small budget time pass.

TOOLSIDAS JUNIOR: 4 Stars. G.

Toolsidas Junior - Trailer

Director: Mridul Mahendra Toolsidas

Starring: Sanjay Dutt, Rajiv Kapoor, Dalip Tahil, Varun Buddhadev

The Story - A Dad is a great snooker player, but he is also an addict. He loves his son and son loves his dad but the alcohol spoils all the fun. Son decides to carry on the legacy of snooker and wants to beat his dad's nemesis.

The Characters - There are many known names like Sanjay Dutt and Rajiv Kapoor but the show is stolen by the big brother of Toolsidas Jr. The scheming big brother has outrageous schemes to make his younger brother a star so he can manage his funds. The young Toolsidas is also a pretty good actor himself. Sanjay Dutt fits the role and brings a uniqueness to it that helps the movie. Dalid Tahil is awesome as a villain, it still makes me crack when I think of his first dialogue to journalist. I win! that's the answer to all your questions! Hilarious.

The Verdict - An awesome family entertainer. The kids are awesome, the brotherly love is cute. What else you want in a movie? Kid has an adventure of his lifetime and you feel good watching a cute movie.

MINNAL MURALI: 4.5 Stars. G

Minnal Murali - Trailer

Directed by Basil Joseph

Starring Tovino Thomas, Guru Somasundaram

The Story - A super hero movie seeped in indian-ness. A beautiful story of a bizarre incident that affected 2 people in different ways. Heroes and villains are formed. The village in unaware of it but slowly the affected understand. How will they use their powers? How should they use their powers. A super Hero in a lungi, perfect recipe for a great movie. Malayalam movies are definitely a cut above the rest it seems.

The Characters - Tovino and Guru are great actors! They put life into these characters. Bring so much honesty to their characters great jugal-bandi between the two. The entire movie revolves around these 2 and they take us for a great ride.

The Verdict - Probably the best super Hero movie ever made in India. It is creative, it is Indian and it is 100% authentic. Whoever thought of it and then whoever implemented the setup in a village, they are genius.

WEB SERIES

HOUSE OF SECRETS - The Burari Deaths: Limited Series: 4.0 Stars. R.

House of Secrets - Trailer

Genre True crime docuseries

Created by: Leena Yadav, Anubhav Chopra

Director: Leena Yadav, Anubhav Chopra

The Story - A true story in a docuseries. 11 bodies were found from a home in a crowded Indian town. A lot of gossip and drama happened. Media is never helping and relatives are twisting their own tale. Cops actually can do a good job if you let them as they solve the mystery.

The Characters - It is a documentary that has all the family clearly defined and hierarchy presented. Horrific tragedy and the more you think the more absurd and unfortunate it looks.

The Verdict - One of the better documentaries I have seen, Though I avoid documentaries. But I will give it a green.

Q1 2022 - Great Female Led Movies this Quarter.

                                                             POPULAR BOLLYWOOD

           -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BACHCHHAN PAANDEY - 3.0 Stars. (G)

Bachchhan Pandey - Trailer

Director: Farhad Samji

Starring: Akshay Kumar, Kriti Sanon, Jacqueline Fernandez, Arshad Warsi, Pankaj Tripathi

Kriti can make any movie a good movie, Akshay tries his best to try all sorts of get up to hide his age and look cool. Surprisingly being a very mainstream cinema it doesn't have an elongated forced romance between protagonists. Though they did have a forced elongated flashback which was not necessary at all. Cut the damn time on the movie man... you don't have to make a 150 minute movie!

Anyway not a bad movie especially if you look at it through the lens of popular cinema, it has a good story and has a pretty ok pace and is pretty light and comic in narration. Movie is about a director wanting to make a movie on life and times of a under world Don.

DASVI - 3.5 Stars. (G)

Dasvi - Trailer

Director: Tushar Jalota

Starring: Abhishek Bachchan, Yami Gautam, Nimrat Kaur

Abhishek may not get the accent right like how Yami can but both did work well in this cute sweet movie which will leave you in a simple minded happiness. Nimrat has done a great job in a role that overshadows others.

Movie is about a egotistical uneducated Politician who has to go to Jail for a few days. He meets the Jailer in Yami who won't take No for an answer.

SHARMAJI NAMKEEN - 3.5 Stars. (G)

Sharmaji Namkeen - Trailer

Director: Hitesh Bhatia

Starring: Rishi Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Suhail Nayyar, Isha Talwar, Sulagna Panigrahi

ऋषि कपूर साहब की आखरी मूवी पूरी करि परेश रावल साहब ने ऋषि कपूर का किरदार खेल के.

Rishi Kapoor shot a few scenes but then could not complete the movie as he passed away. So we get Paresh Rawal in scenes and Rishi in others. Surprisingly not much changes in narration of the story, obviously Paresh is not Rishi Kapoor so the cuteness of the bumbly uncle that Rishi plays can't be done by Paresh but at least we have a good movie on hand.

A forced retirement makes the world collapse for almost all of us, your kids and society want you to behave a certain way in retirement but what if you don't want to sit in a park feeding birds? Rishi does a great job of playing the character who is looking for a new life. No one can play that character like him. Juhi makes a come back for Rishi and both of them make a great duo one last time.

83 - 3.75 (G)

83 - Trailer

Directed by Kabir Khan

Starring: Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Jiiva, Pankaj Tripathi

कपिल देव डा जवाब नहीं.

What an actor this guy Ranveer Singh has turned out to be. I forgot I am not watching Kapil Dev. Other supporting cast was not much to write about except the guy who plays Gavaskar, he brings a cool airs about him for being a batsman above the rest and still struggling for form.

The movie is refreshingly simple and good. I expected this to be another - Bharat Mata Ki Jai kind of jingoistic self proclamation of greatness that borders on insanity as the present India likes to see itself. Instead this movie was almost a documentary showing how things unfolded and how much of an underdog Indian team was in 1983 when they won the World Cup. Good one to watch.

BADHAAI DO - 4.0 Stars. (PG)

Badhaai Do - Trailer

Director: Harshavardhan Kulkarni

Starring: Rajkummar Rao, Bhumi Pednekar, Sheeba Chaddha, Chum Darang

अगर आपके ज़हन में ये ख्याल उठता है की भाई ये गे लोग का किंग आउट ऑफ़ थे क्लोसेट इतनी बड़ी बात क्यों होती है.

Rajkummar Rao is back with a bang, he was not at his peak form in a few movies. Even though this movie also is formulaic of the middle class setup he has mastered, but this time it had enough twists and turns for Rajkummar to navigate that he was motivated to do a great job. Bhumi gave him good support but Chum Darang was the star that made this movie special. She has a refreshing cuteness that she brings to this entire middle class comic tragedy.

Movie is about a couple who have their own reasons to marry with each other - to get the family off their back. Obviously if you try to out smart society it will create situations. The ending is great, the last scene between Rajkummar and Bhumi on the phone was perfectly done and both of them knocked it out of the park. Watch it.

GEHRAIYAAN - 4.0 Stars. (R)

Gehraiyaan - Trailer

Director: Shakun Batra

Starring: Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ananya Panday, Dhairya Karwa

इतनी गहराइयाँ हैं संबंधों में की आग का दरिया है और डूब के जाना है.

Not a simple movie, not for the weak at heart. This is some real stuff going on. Deepika probably gave her best performance, how we used to call these role non-glamorous roles. Now it is is called an actor doing a role. Hats off to her, she was on a different plane in this one. Siddhant did not have it going but then his character was a difficult one and a little under developed. Ananya is one of the most improved actors today, and we could not have called her an actor few years ago.

2 Cousin sisters have their relationships tangled. The Boy Friends have their own problems going, the problems are real and genuine and everything in the movie happens in a very real way, none of it looks like a movie. When you think now you know what kind of movie this is, it will surprise you with a real ugly life slap. AND it has good music. Watch it.

LOOOP LAPETA - 4.5 Stars. (PG)

Looop Lapeta - Trailer

Director: Aakash Bhatia

Starring Taapsee Pannu, Tahir Raj Bhasin

सोचो समझो परखो नहीं हुआ? कोई नहीं फिर सोचो समझो परखो!

Do you see a pattern here? Taapsee again features the lead role in another great movie! The female leads just are better and have better movies. Why is it? It's not because women are better at acting, it's because they put in a lot more effort on getting movies that are creative and something new. Also they don't get a bunch of filth that needs to be done in name of big bollywood cinema that their counterparts male actors get. Tahir Bhasin is a perfect foil in this and aligns and sometimes overshadows Taapsee.

Movie is the genre that we have seen often now. A person stuck in a time warp tries to get out of it with a desirable result. The treatment of the movie is so fresh, I love it. The director has taken it in a comic angle and the characters sometimes are right out of a comic specially the sons of the jewelry store guy. repeating same 'pachaas lakh' every time also adds to the perfect comic narration of the movie.

CHANDIGARH KARE AASHIQUI - 3.5 Stars. (PG13)

Chandigarh kare aashiqui - Trailer

Director: Abhishek Kapoor

Starring: Ayushmann Khurrana, Vaani Kapoor

अगर आपके ज़हन में ये सवाल उठता है की भाई ये ट्रांसजेंडर है क्या?

Another LGBTQ movie. Ayushman's movies always are with a message, he gets into the character very well but the character of a macho body builder in itself is very caricatured. It could have been done better but I guess they had to show how extreme testosterone driven Macho guy he is to bring the discussion on transgender alive.

The movie is very informative and still pretty engaging. The star of the show is Vani Kapoor, easily her best work till date. This blog declares her an actor a big honor that she will never know about. She plays this stubborn but delicate, freedom loving but bogged down by society person who is trying to survive but on her own terms.

                                                         BUDGET MOVIES
   ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JALSA - 4.5 Stars. (R)

Jalsa - Trailer

Director: Suresh Triveni

Starring: Vidya Balan, Shefali Shah, Rohini Hattangadi

दो उम्दा कलाकारों ने दिया इतना स्ट्रेस की हो गया दिमाग का दही.

Vidya Balan and Shefali played a Jugalbandi of stress and pain that only greats who have honed their craft to perfection can. This was a 'Shakti' of Bachchan and Dilip Kumar, that was pain and sorrow this is Pain and stress. Very well done.

Movie is about a hit and run case that hits very close to home. The natural reactions during a hit and run and the trauma a mind can go through both ways, the victim and the perpetrator both are at similar juncture both need answers and both are in pain, one is a sorrowful angry pain and the other is stressful guilty pain.

A THURSDAY - 3.5 Stars. (PG)

A Thursday - Trailer

Director: Behzad Khambata

Starring: Yami Gautam, Atul Kulkarni, Neha Dhupia, Dimple Kapadia, Karanvir Sharma

मंगलवार हो या बुधवार एक अच्छा कटाक्ष मारने के लिए सब दिन बराबर हैं.

A female protagonist at the helm guarantees the movie cannot be an old school garbage or a really bad movie. Yami puts her best in the movie with Dimple and Neha are pro at their craft. Atul Kulkarni has a pretty significant role and he always does well no matter where you slot him.

A teacher runs a day care kind of facility from home but suddenly turns into a kidnapper. Why, how, what? Good one to watch, I will allow you to forward a little in the first half.

KAUN PRAVIN TAMBE - 3.5 Stars. (G)

Kaun Pravin Tambe - Trailer

Director: Jaiprad Desai.

Starring: Shreyas Talpade, Ashish Vidyarthi, Parambrata Chatterjee, Anjali Patil

हार या जीत नफा या नुक्सान क्रिकेट का कीड़ा एक बार लग गया तो बुझाये न बने

Shreyas does a good job of being this lower middle class Mumbai guy who is obsessed with cricket. Very under rated star but this one was a good performance by him.

The movie is on life and times of one Pravin Tambe who was never a successful cricketer but kept on playing hoping to play Ranji one day. But he was cast as too old and low in skills, but he was very high on perseverance.

COBALT BLUE - 0 Stars. (PG13)

Cobalt Blue - Trailer

Director: Sachin Kundalkar

Starring: Prateik Babbar, Neelay Mehendale, Anjali Sivaraman

भाई इतनी आर्ट इतनी आर्ट की समझ ही नहीं आयी

An LGBTQ movie that was also a bouncer. Too much of an Art movie, I could see the Cobalt blue shade all over the movie wherever Prateik Babbar ventures but I was lost what the heck is going on. Way way beyond me, or maybe I was just tired.

                                                              TV WEB SERIES

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ARANYAK - 3.0 Stars. (PG)

Aranyak - Trailer

Director: Vinay Waikul

Starring: Raveena Tandon, Parambrata Chatterjee, Ashutosh Rana, Taneesha Joshi, Anna Ador, Zakir Hussain, Meghna Malik

कौन है जो मार के टांग रहा है आदमी है या जानवर या दोनों.

Raveena our yesteryear heartthrob returns as a Mommy and an inspector. She does a pretty good job with what she gets. The haryanvi dialect did not come natural to her but it was well done. Parambrata was too one dimensional. Ashutosh Rana doing his crazy uncle role was annoying. Taneesha was easily the best as Raveena's daughter, what an actor.

The TV series is about a small town serial killer murder mystery that has our suspicion from an man-animal to every innocent dude in town. If you got not much to do you can skip watch this easy going easily understood whodunnit.

BEST SELLER - 3.5 Stars. (PG)

Best Seller - Trailer

Starring: Arjan Bajwa, Shruti Haasan, Mithun, Gauhar Khan.

किताब लिखते लिखते खून कर दिया या खून कर के किताब लिख दी

Shruti Haasan has come a long way, she carries this series all by herself and does a great job. Gauhar Khan is another actor who is awesome to watch in her complicated role. Others including Mithun lend good support. Mithun needs to tone down and get back to being an actor he can be and please stop using that bad wig. I am sure there are better ones out there.

Story is pretty complicated and full of twists and turns. A best selling writer writes one book and then is in a funk and can't get a second book published. Why did the first one become such a big hit? Was it his? Did he steal ideas? Then there is complicated relationship with his wife and his new fan. Wife has his own fan waiting in the wings. Plot thickens but never becomes over cumbersome. A good TV series to watch.

HUMAN - 2.5 Stars. (PG13)

Human - Trailer

Starring: Shefali Shah, Kirti Kulhari, Vishal Jethwa

कुछ भी हो जाए दवाई तो बना के छोड़ेंगे

We have discussed Shefali 'great' Shah enough, Kriti Kulhari is another amazing actor but this show was Mr Vishal Jethwa's show. What an actor, the Bhopal accent the lower class attitude the confusion and the frustration all done with so much skill, Vishal rocks.

Show is about Drug trials by big companies and the misuse of human subjects etc. Too heavy a subject to digest. Very gross at times, they show too much of body cutting and medical stuff. One sided villains and victims also make it difficult to watch. Overall the actors do try their best to pull this drab into relevance but it has to be skipped and fast forwarded to not waste your time.
