Q1 2022 - Great Female Led Movies this Quarter.

                                                             POPULAR BOLLYWOOD

           -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BACHCHHAN PAANDEY - 3.0 Stars. (G)

Bachchhan Pandey - Trailer

Director: Farhad Samji

Starring: Akshay Kumar, Kriti Sanon, Jacqueline Fernandez, Arshad Warsi, Pankaj Tripathi

Kriti can make any movie a good movie, Akshay tries his best to try all sorts of get up to hide his age and look cool. Surprisingly being a very mainstream cinema it doesn't have an elongated forced romance between protagonists. Though they did have a forced elongated flashback which was not necessary at all. Cut the damn time on the movie man... you don't have to make a 150 minute movie!

Anyway not a bad movie especially if you look at it through the lens of popular cinema, it has a good story and has a pretty ok pace and is pretty light and comic in narration. Movie is about a director wanting to make a movie on life and times of a under world Don.

DASVI - 3.5 Stars. (G)

Dasvi - Trailer

Director: Tushar Jalota

Starring: Abhishek Bachchan, Yami Gautam, Nimrat Kaur

Abhishek may not get the accent right like how Yami can but both did work well in this cute sweet movie which will leave you in a simple minded happiness. Nimrat has done a great job in a role that overshadows others.

Movie is about a egotistical uneducated Politician who has to go to Jail for a few days. He meets the Jailer in Yami who won't take No for an answer.

SHARMAJI NAMKEEN - 3.5 Stars. (G)

Sharmaji Namkeen - Trailer

Director: Hitesh Bhatia

Starring: Rishi Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Suhail Nayyar, Isha Talwar, Sulagna Panigrahi

ऋषि कपूर साहब की आखरी मूवी पूरी करि परेश रावल साहब ने ऋषि कपूर का किरदार खेल के.

Rishi Kapoor shot a few scenes but then could not complete the movie as he passed away. So we get Paresh Rawal in scenes and Rishi in others. Surprisingly not much changes in narration of the story, obviously Paresh is not Rishi Kapoor so the cuteness of the bumbly uncle that Rishi plays can't be done by Paresh but at least we have a good movie on hand.

A forced retirement makes the world collapse for almost all of us, your kids and society want you to behave a certain way in retirement but what if you don't want to sit in a park feeding birds? Rishi does a great job of playing the character who is looking for a new life. No one can play that character like him. Juhi makes a come back for Rishi and both of them make a great duo one last time.

83 - 3.75 (G)

83 - Trailer

Directed by Kabir Khan

Starring: Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Jiiva, Pankaj Tripathi

कपिल देव डा जवाब नहीं.

What an actor this guy Ranveer Singh has turned out to be. I forgot I am not watching Kapil Dev. Other supporting cast was not much to write about except the guy who plays Gavaskar, he brings a cool airs about him for being a batsman above the rest and still struggling for form.

The movie is refreshingly simple and good. I expected this to be another - Bharat Mata Ki Jai kind of jingoistic self proclamation of greatness that borders on insanity as the present India likes to see itself. Instead this movie was almost a documentary showing how things unfolded and how much of an underdog Indian team was in 1983 when they won the World Cup. Good one to watch.

BADHAAI DO - 4.0 Stars. (PG)

Badhaai Do - Trailer

Director: Harshavardhan Kulkarni

Starring: Rajkummar Rao, Bhumi Pednekar, Sheeba Chaddha, Chum Darang

अगर आपके ज़हन में ये ख्याल उठता है की भाई ये गे लोग का किंग आउट ऑफ़ थे क्लोसेट इतनी बड़ी बात क्यों होती है.

Rajkummar Rao is back with a bang, he was not at his peak form in a few movies. Even though this movie also is formulaic of the middle class setup he has mastered, but this time it had enough twists and turns for Rajkummar to navigate that he was motivated to do a great job. Bhumi gave him good support but Chum Darang was the star that made this movie special. She has a refreshing cuteness that she brings to this entire middle class comic tragedy.

Movie is about a couple who have their own reasons to marry with each other - to get the family off their back. Obviously if you try to out smart society it will create situations. The ending is great, the last scene between Rajkummar and Bhumi on the phone was perfectly done and both of them knocked it out of the park. Watch it.

GEHRAIYAAN - 4.0 Stars. (R)

Gehraiyaan - Trailer

Director: Shakun Batra

Starring: Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ananya Panday, Dhairya Karwa

इतनी गहराइयाँ हैं संबंधों में की आग का दरिया है और डूब के जाना है.

Not a simple movie, not for the weak at heart. This is some real stuff going on. Deepika probably gave her best performance, how we used to call these role non-glamorous roles. Now it is is called an actor doing a role. Hats off to her, she was on a different plane in this one. Siddhant did not have it going but then his character was a difficult one and a little under developed. Ananya is one of the most improved actors today, and we could not have called her an actor few years ago.

2 Cousin sisters have their relationships tangled. The Boy Friends have their own problems going, the problems are real and genuine and everything in the movie happens in a very real way, none of it looks like a movie. When you think now you know what kind of movie this is, it will surprise you with a real ugly life slap. AND it has good music. Watch it.

LOOOP LAPETA - 4.5 Stars. (PG)

Looop Lapeta - Trailer

Director: Aakash Bhatia

Starring Taapsee Pannu, Tahir Raj Bhasin

सोचो समझो परखो नहीं हुआ? कोई नहीं फिर सोचो समझो परखो!

Do you see a pattern here? Taapsee again features the lead role in another great movie! The female leads just are better and have better movies. Why is it? It's not because women are better at acting, it's because they put in a lot more effort on getting movies that are creative and something new. Also they don't get a bunch of filth that needs to be done in name of big bollywood cinema that their counterparts male actors get. Tahir Bhasin is a perfect foil in this and aligns and sometimes overshadows Taapsee.

Movie is the genre that we have seen often now. A person stuck in a time warp tries to get out of it with a desirable result. The treatment of the movie is so fresh, I love it. The director has taken it in a comic angle and the characters sometimes are right out of a comic specially the sons of the jewelry store guy. repeating same 'pachaas lakh' every time also adds to the perfect comic narration of the movie.

CHANDIGARH KARE AASHIQUI - 3.5 Stars. (PG13)

Chandigarh kare aashiqui - Trailer

Director: Abhishek Kapoor

Starring: Ayushmann Khurrana, Vaani Kapoor

अगर आपके ज़हन में ये सवाल उठता है की भाई ये ट्रांसजेंडर है क्या?

Another LGBTQ movie. Ayushman's movies always are with a message, he gets into the character very well but the character of a macho body builder in itself is very caricatured. It could have been done better but I guess they had to show how extreme testosterone driven Macho guy he is to bring the discussion on transgender alive.

The movie is very informative and still pretty engaging. The star of the show is Vani Kapoor, easily her best work till date. This blog declares her an actor a big honor that she will never know about. She plays this stubborn but delicate, freedom loving but bogged down by society person who is trying to survive but on her own terms.

                                                         BUDGET MOVIES
   ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JALSA - 4.5 Stars. (R)

Jalsa - Trailer

Director: Suresh Triveni

Starring: Vidya Balan, Shefali Shah, Rohini Hattangadi

दो उम्दा कलाकारों ने दिया इतना स्ट्रेस की हो गया दिमाग का दही.

Vidya Balan and Shefali played a Jugalbandi of stress and pain that only greats who have honed their craft to perfection can. This was a 'Shakti' of Bachchan and Dilip Kumar, that was pain and sorrow this is Pain and stress. Very well done.

Movie is about a hit and run case that hits very close to home. The natural reactions during a hit and run and the trauma a mind can go through both ways, the victim and the perpetrator both are at similar juncture both need answers and both are in pain, one is a sorrowful angry pain and the other is stressful guilty pain.

A THURSDAY - 3.5 Stars. (PG)

A Thursday - Trailer

Director: Behzad Khambata

Starring: Yami Gautam, Atul Kulkarni, Neha Dhupia, Dimple Kapadia, Karanvir Sharma

मंगलवार हो या बुधवार एक अच्छा कटाक्ष मारने के लिए सब दिन बराबर हैं.

A female protagonist at the helm guarantees the movie cannot be an old school garbage or a really bad movie. Yami puts her best in the movie with Dimple and Neha are pro at their craft. Atul Kulkarni has a pretty significant role and he always does well no matter where you slot him.

A teacher runs a day care kind of facility from home but suddenly turns into a kidnapper. Why, how, what? Good one to watch, I will allow you to forward a little in the first half.

KAUN PRAVIN TAMBE - 3.5 Stars. (G)

Kaun Pravin Tambe - Trailer

Director: Jaiprad Desai.

Starring: Shreyas Talpade, Ashish Vidyarthi, Parambrata Chatterjee, Anjali Patil

हार या जीत नफा या नुक्सान क्रिकेट का कीड़ा एक बार लग गया तो बुझाये न बने

Shreyas does a good job of being this lower middle class Mumbai guy who is obsessed with cricket. Very under rated star but this one was a good performance by him.

The movie is on life and times of one Pravin Tambe who was never a successful cricketer but kept on playing hoping to play Ranji one day. But he was cast as too old and low in skills, but he was very high on perseverance.

COBALT BLUE - 0 Stars. (PG13)

Cobalt Blue - Trailer

Director: Sachin Kundalkar

Starring: Prateik Babbar, Neelay Mehendale, Anjali Sivaraman

भाई इतनी आर्ट इतनी आर्ट की समझ ही नहीं आयी

An LGBTQ movie that was also a bouncer. Too much of an Art movie, I could see the Cobalt blue shade all over the movie wherever Prateik Babbar ventures but I was lost what the heck is going on. Way way beyond me, or maybe I was just tired.

                                                              TV WEB SERIES

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ARANYAK - 3.0 Stars. (PG)

Aranyak - Trailer

Director: Vinay Waikul

Starring: Raveena Tandon, Parambrata Chatterjee, Ashutosh Rana, Taneesha Joshi, Anna Ador, Zakir Hussain, Meghna Malik

कौन है जो मार के टांग रहा है आदमी है या जानवर या दोनों.

Raveena our yesteryear heartthrob returns as a Mommy and an inspector. She does a pretty good job with what she gets. The haryanvi dialect did not come natural to her but it was well done. Parambrata was too one dimensional. Ashutosh Rana doing his crazy uncle role was annoying. Taneesha was easily the best as Raveena's daughter, what an actor.

The TV series is about a small town serial killer murder mystery that has our suspicion from an man-animal to every innocent dude in town. If you got not much to do you can skip watch this easy going easily understood whodunnit.

BEST SELLER - 3.5 Stars. (PG)

Best Seller - Trailer

Starring: Arjan Bajwa, Shruti Haasan, Mithun, Gauhar Khan.

किताब लिखते लिखते खून कर दिया या खून कर के किताब लिख दी

Shruti Haasan has come a long way, she carries this series all by herself and does a great job. Gauhar Khan is another actor who is awesome to watch in her complicated role. Others including Mithun lend good support. Mithun needs to tone down and get back to being an actor he can be and please stop using that bad wig. I am sure there are better ones out there.

Story is pretty complicated and full of twists and turns. A best selling writer writes one book and then is in a funk and can't get a second book published. Why did the first one become such a big hit? Was it his? Did he steal ideas? Then there is complicated relationship with his wife and his new fan. Wife has his own fan waiting in the wings. Plot thickens but never becomes over cumbersome. A good TV series to watch.

HUMAN - 2.5 Stars. (PG13)

Human - Trailer

Starring: Shefali Shah, Kirti Kulhari, Vishal Jethwa

कुछ भी हो जाए दवाई तो बना के छोड़ेंगे

We have discussed Shefali 'great' Shah enough, Kriti Kulhari is another amazing actor but this show was Mr Vishal Jethwa's show. What an actor, the Bhopal accent the lower class attitude the confusion and the frustration all done with so much skill, Vishal rocks.

Show is about Drug trials by big companies and the misuse of human subjects etc. Too heavy a subject to digest. Very gross at times, they show too much of body cutting and medical stuff. One sided villains and victims also make it difficult to watch. Overall the actors do try their best to pull this drab into relevance but it has to be skipped and fast forwarded to not waste your time.

Top 10 Hindi Movies of 2021

1. PAGGLAIT

What I remember - Few months old marriage has ended with death of husband, and that is the least of the problem for everyone including the bride. Awesome setup of how death is an event in everyone's life just like marriage or any other festival.

FROM THE FILES -

PAGGLAIT - 5 Stars. (PG13)

Director - Umesh Bist

Stars - Sanya Malhotra, Sayani Gupta, Sheeba Chaddha

Pagglait - Trailer

What a movie! Love it. How many stories can you tell within a simple sombre 12 days after a death? Answer is hundreds. Sanya gets a great movie to anchor, the movie revolves around how she loses her husband within 5 months of marriage and how the entire world crashes.... or does it?

The funny thing about the world is Death is not the finale, it is just part of the fabric of life. Death happens and like any other twist in life, like winning a lottery, changing where you live, or any other major event; death also throws a few twist for every character that is left on earth to deal with this new reality. A few are grieving, a few are hurting, a few are scheming, a few are trying new ways to survive and our main character Sanya is trying to find herself first time in her life!

2. BOMBAY ROSE

What I remember - Is it a painting? Is it a poetry? Is it a movie? Is it a cartoon? I don't know but I have never seen something like this. Every frame has so many things packed and then it also tugs at your heart.

FROM THE FILES -

BOMBAY ROSE - 5 Stars. (G)

Director - Gitanjali Rao

Stars - Cyli Khare, Amit Deondi, Gargi Shitole

Bombay Rose - Trailer

How do you rate a movie that has no reference? I have seen nothing like this before! Did you see how many artists were involved in painting this masterpiece? Wait and see the credits at the end. Haunting and beautiful music plays in the background, the story unfolds with each screen shot like a painting. The movie shifting between desires of the mind vs the reality as it shifts from olden times to reality! Just a work of genius that I feel very small to even talk about. You need to relax, sit back and enjoy this ride. Don't expect things to happen, just enjoy paintings after painting unfurl in front of you. Notice the details the beauty and ahh... the music. The movie covers a lot of things from a poor girl's struggles of raising a family by herself, to a beautiful inter religion love story, to friendship and empathy. Gitanjali Rao... you are a genius.

3. SKATER GIRL

What I remember - The face of the skater girl, her face suppressing everything in it. But these wishes of living a life keep coming to her. The village, the kids, the skates and their freedom.

FROM THE FILES -

SKATER GIRL : 5 Stars. Drama.

Skater Girl - Trailer

Directed by - Manjari Makijany

Starring - Rachel Sanchita Gupta, Shafin Patel, Amrit Maghera, Jonathan Readwin, Waheeda Rehman

This is one of those emotional decisions I make because it is my blog. I give a movie 5 Stars and people come back and say what was so special!  I have to be true to my senses, when a movie makes me choke up and I can't talk for hours and then I sleep thinking about the movie I got to give it a 5. It makes me think of my Mom's efforts to bring freedom and confidence to people who don't have food on the table. The movie has many cringes, like typical foreigners coming to a village to find themselves and fix the village. But if you keep clear of those things and focus on the Brother and sister relationship and the skate board in their lives, you will cry out of happiness. If you look at the life of a girl and her small steps to do what she wants, her cute little love story and to top it all, great acting from all the characters involved, you will see what I saw.

4. ZINDAGI IN SHORT

What I remember - All those stories are just amazing, I feel happy when I see they make movies, I mean they make these movies.

FROM THE FILES -

ZINDAGI IN SHORT - 4.5 Stars. (PG13)

Directors - Vinay Chhawal, Tahira Kashyap, Vijayeta Kumar

Stars - Aisha Ahmed, Akash Dabas, Deepak Dobriyal

Zindagi In Short - Trailer

How many good films can we take in a quarter? Another masterpiece with 7 fabulous stories. I think 4 of them were just awesome presentations that were a knock out of the park. The creativity in these stories, the freshness in direction and boldness in presentation is just something we wouldn't have believed a decade ago. If you want to watch a few go with Chhajju ke dahi bhalle, Pinni, Nano sa Phobia, and Sleeping partner. All have a completely different aspect of Zindagi and a fresh treatment that you will enjoy.

5. RAM PRASAD KI TEHRVI

What I remember - Similar genre as Pagglait but very different set up. Ram Prasad has died and now it is time for life to show case through death what it is all about. The mom telling "Nth" time the same story on how he died, is classic. Everyone goes to these things and wants to hear fresh story again, death is just another time pass in the end.

FROM THE FILES -

RAM PRASAD KI TEHRVI - 4.5 Stars. (PG)

Director - Seema Bhargava

Stars - Supriya Pathak, Konkona Sen Sharma, Parambrata Chattopad

Ram Prasad Ki Tehrvi- Trailer

Another masterpiece weaved around a death. Similar to 'Pagglait' in genre and treatment but different in content and presentation. Ram Prasad dies and life takes a turn for everyone associated with him. Ram Prasad's sons and their wives have things to fix. There are neighbors, brothers and sisters and everyone has some agenda. Very well done, Death is not a sad affair at all, that's a Human facade because every human thinks how sad it will be when he/she passes away, but otherwise it is all down to business of ..... Life. The movie is never sad, it is funny, dramatic and entertaining all because of true depiction of society. Watch it!

6. CHHORII

What I remember - The best horror movie in recent times, take the bad horror that exists in bollywood and makes into something watchable. The kids running around is scary!

FROM THE FILES -

CHHORII - 4.5 Stars. (R)

Director - Vishal Furia

Stars - Nushrratt Bharuccha, Mita Vashisht, Saurabh Goyal

Chhorii - Trailer

Horror as a Genre has been pretty ordinary in Hindi Movies.... UNTIL NOW. Here comes chhorii!! What a movie, the horror as genre was transformed by a movie called Stree few years back when they turned it into a Horror-Comedy. In this movie horror remains Horror but they take horror out of just the bhoot and spirits level .. or did they? Maybe it's all their but the treatment is dark and better. Nushratt Bharucha does a great job of being this city girl who is trapped in this small village home that is possessed... or is it? Horror through kids is a different level of horror and when you do not use flying spirits who are picking people in mid air type of gimmicks it becomes more real. The movie is about a couple who need to run from loan sharks to a small village where they get trapped in a house that is ... lets say .. weird. Go Watch it.

7. SIR

What I remember - A love story between a maid and educated NRI type guy. Is it even possible? What are we looking in a partner? Are we that different as people? What about society? Aren't we the society?

FROM THE FILES -

SIR - 4.5 Stars. (PG)

Director - Rohena Gera

Starring - Tillotama Shome, Vivek Gomber

Sir - Trailer

India is booming with these new generation of writers and directors spoiling us with these masterpieces, slicing dicing life like we have never seen before in Hindi movies, what's not to love? Just be happy and enjoy them one treat at a time.

The movie is a complex tale of a house help and a US return 'upper middle class' guy who is struggling to fit into his role in society. The confusion boils over the well barricaded barriers created by society for 5000 years. What follows is a beautiful presentation on how far can a flight of fancy actually fly.

8. AK Vs AK

What I remember - Whacky and weird that only Anurag Kashyap can be. Mashing real life and reel life into one. At times it is so real it disturbs, sometimes its funny. Still remember Anil Kapoor's son stealing the show with his one hilarious take on himself.

FROM THE FILES -

AK Vs AK - 4.5Stars. (R)

Director - Vikramaditya Motwane

Stars - Anil Kapoor, Anurag Kashyap, Sonam Kapoor

AK Vs AK

Technically it was a movie from last year, but I forgot to cover it. This is not a movie you don't write about, that's blasphemy. The GOAT of originality and creativity Mr Anurag Kashyap is at the helm himself (Actually it is Vikramaditya Motwane, but I still credit AK). Just like the movie 'Bombay Rose', you don't have a reference to deal with this movie. It is so new that it's review should happen in 'Nature' magazine. It is reality mixed with role-play mixed with real things but in a tightly bound story. It did not make sense... right? Yea.. that's the point.

For good 30 minutes you are disturbed by what you are watching. Actually I remained disturbed even after the movie was over. The movie is about real Anurag Kashyap who goes crazy against real Anil Kapoor in a fictitious fight for supremacy with all the real life characters from their lives. Anil Kapoor actually gives a great performance at (whatever zillion years) this age he is at and still refuses to age. Again disturbingly Anurag Kashyap tells him how he will give a performance of his life because in reality he is looking for his real daughter Sonam Kapoor who allegedly has been kidnapped. Unexpectedly the entire show is stolen by a gem of an actor called 'Harshvardhan Kapoor' his cameo is hilarious. Only weak link probably is Anurag Kashyap the actor but without him the movie cannot be.

9. ANKAHI KAHANIYA

What I remember - Lonely is a crowded city and loving a mannequin, 80s love story around a movie theater, and some more. Again, I love these ankahi kahaniya and in general these short story format where you give Directors to go make a short on a lose subject like - Ankahi.

FROM THE FILES -

ANKAHI KAHANIYA : 4.5 STARS. MA.

Ankahi kahaniya - Trailer

Directed by - Abhishek Chaubey, Saket Chaudhary, Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari

Starring - Abhishek Banerjee, Rinku Rajguru, Delzad Hiwale, Kunal Kapoor, Zoya Hussain, Nikhil Dwivedi, Palomi Ghosh

Great talent creating poetry. The 3 top directors picking some good actors and going off into making 'ankahi kahaniya', I wonder do they always come up with a title first and then go about making movies? Do writers write thinking, ok let me write a 'ankahi kahani'? A story not told yet! How difficult is that! I feel too little to even take a stab at critiquing these great people doing this great work. But hey! that's what I do in this blog. Good thing is they don't know they are being reviewed by me.

3 stories, unique in their own way and vastly different are presented to you. Each is a marvel and makes you enthralled and pause; make you Happy and Sad. All 3 are wholesome entertainers, beautifully done. Immigrant workers working day in day out in shops in mumbai, the loneliness of the job makes him look for a partner. In a billion people it is not easy to find someone when you had no training or time to figure how to deal with this problem. Then someone shows up in your life, does it matter if the person is alive? You need someone ... who cares who it is. Second story is about cheating husband, and how to punish him. Do you want to follow the trail and get to the bottom of it? Is it possible you may find your own story while travelling that path? Third story is probably the saddest and more heart wrenching than the rest, young love blooms in 80s single cinema theaters, in the crowded world, glances and few actions are all that can convey love and acceptance. The love story is all about just a few movements, but how do you go beyond that?

10. SHAADISTHAN

What I remember - The mom of the girl who is oppressed putting forth her arguments against the modern liberal girl who doesn't approve her ways. Nicely done movie.

FROM THE FILES -

SHAADISTHAN - 4.5 Stars. (PG13)

Shaadisthan - Trailer

Director - Raj Singh Chaudhary

Stars - Nivedita Bhattacharya, Sanjay Dadhich, Kirti Kulhari

Look, I don't like movies which are filled with 'right wing talking points' conversely I love movies when a movie talks against the old school systems of society or in other words filled with 'left wing talking points'. O well... I am jus human. I like confirming my own biases. The movie unabashedly punches the old school society which revolves around 'shaadi', a girl's life is all about shaadi. How to get over with 'the problem' that the girl is, by getting her married off. There is no other reason for her birth. Thinking of it, actually even a guy's life is all about what career he can get to, and how much money can he make for his parents and family. If he can't do it, he is not treated that well either.

The movie is about this girl who has fought and lost against an overbearing society that has parents in it's grip until she meets this group of young musicians who have formed a band and are taking her family with them in their van to a wedding. Kirti Kulhari is a good actor and she fits the role of a single girl musician in a band who cares less about traditions. As I said the movie is a little harsh on the 'shaadisthan society' but there are a few good scenes between girl's Mom and Kirti that defines the message of this enterprise. Overall if you have hated traditions you will love it, because it preaches the choir.

OTHER NOTABLES -

11. WHITE TIGER

12. HASEEN DILRUBA

13. WEDDING GUEST

14. AHAAN

15. SHERSHAAH

Q4 - End of another year in Pandemic.

                                                            POPULAR BOLLYWOOD

           -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BUNTY AUR BUBLY 2 - 2.5 Stars. (G)

Director - Varun V. Sharma

Stars - Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukerji, Siddhant Chaturvedi

Bunty aur Bubly 2 - Trailer

Bunty changes from Abhishek to Saif, Bubly remains as Rani but the movie does not remain the same fun outing as the last one. Things have changed in last 20 years, the scams that can be stupidly believed few decades ago don't look that real anymore in age of cell phones and social media. Saif and Rani try hard but they can't salvage it. Saif is off color lately, his accent looks fake as his tummy. If you can't create a believable pot belly look don't have that look, does not make sense why you will tie a pillow around you and think it should be good for your look. Rani is a good actor and whatever enjoyable and fun the movie is, it's all her. The new (Sidhant and Sharvari) Bunty and Babli are trying many makeovers and doing all the scheming but it all looks tired jaded and done before.

The story is about how a New Bunty and Babli are scheming people using old Bunty and Bubli's name and hence the original duo need to get back in the game. The movie loses authenticity once Abhishek is not there and Sr Bachchan as the cop was something special, replacing him with an off color Pankaj Tripathi doesn't cut it. It would have been great if they got the original cast together, it would have been hilarious.

SOORYAVANSHI - 0 Stars. (G)

Director - Rohit Shetty

Stars - Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Ajay Devgn

Sooryavanshi - Trailer

This is remnant of so called 'Masala Full Entertainment' movie that was called 'Real Bollywood'. The masala ingredients are - Zero creativity, old school thinking, cringy nationalism, stupidity, exploding cars, slow motion scenes, sun glasses, terrorists etc etc. Akshay Kumar who is like a Biryani with last year's expiry date reminds us again why he should not be doing movies anymore. Once upon a time his looks carried his zero acting talents, then he learnt some comic skills that carried him, then he actually did some good acting that carried him. NOW he is at a stage he needs to STOP. He single handedly pulled the movie down, though I have to give credit to Rohit Shetty for bagging the 'David Dhawan Award' for rehashing a formula again and again with zero conscious. The worst part of the movie is it obsesses on telling us who is good Muslim and who is a bad Muslim. There is no mention of any other religion but every few scenes there is big deal on how they are showing how Muslims should behave and prove they are worthy of being treated as humans all in garb of Nationalism. eeew... cringy and gross movie. When you have to call all 3 Singhams to save your climax you know you have made a bad movie.

ANNAATTHE - 1.5 Stars. (G).

Director - Siva

Stars - Rajinikanth, Kushboo, Meena

Annaatthe - Trailer

We live in 1980s, as Rajni keeps making these duds. I don't think he can help himself, that's the only thing his aging followers want but they are dwindling in numbers fast. This probably will end soon. It is also not an original Hindi movie, so I won't spend too much time bashing it. I wanted to see if there is a single 'new' thing added in last 30 years... nope. Nothing. He twists his hands and people fly and die, he does his one liners, some old school comedy. Movie is about Brother's love for his Sister, which is also wrapped in patriarchy. Brother loves sister so much that she can't breath. Then she decides to breath and run away but obviously she should have given up on her desires and lived without breathing because the great Brother is the only one who can save her. Yea... nothing changed.

DHAMAKA - 3.0 Stars. (G)

Director - Ram Madhvani

Stars - Kartik Aaryan, Mohammed Mansoor, Mrunal Thakur

Dhamaka - Trailer

The gulf between skill levels of Male and Female actors in Bollywood is so large that a Dhamaka can go down as an average film instead of an interesting movie. Karthik Aaryan a below Average actor is given a role of his lifetime, obviously he is not ready for it. Mrunal Thakur who could have easily made us cry and feel all the emotions that Karthik can't is just his love interest and on the sidelines because she is a female lead who cannot "carry" a movie. So are the sad facts of Bollywood. Director himself did not do a good job of engaging us still the movie had right intentions and a message to communicate! The movie is about how paid media is corrupt and the pressures acting on journalists to deliver News that is actually not News but advertisements for the powerful. Our lead character who comes into the business as an upright journalist compromises his values to stay and rise in the business and how it affects common man who actually believe him. Dhamaka is a series of bomb blasts happening purported by someone who is demanding an apology from Government. What Karthik could not do was done in 2 minutes at the end by a random actor during the climax - Make us emotional by emoting.

HUM DO HUMAARE DO - 2.5 Stars. (G)

Director - Abhishek Jain

Stars - Kriti Sanon, Rajkummar Rao, Paresh Rawal

Hum Do Humare Do - Trailer

As Rajkummar loses his Midas touch, he comes crashing back to earth with movies that are rehash of his own genre of movies that he used to excel in. This middle class shaadi / love story genre has now become a formula and hence a problem. How to create something new from the formula? This movie was not an 'Idea of creativity' instead someone put money to create a movie with the same formula that works. The movie is about a guy who loves a gal who likes families and the guy has none. The entire premise is so flimsily put together that it doesn't make any sense for the guy to falsify his entire life by hiring his parents and entire family. Comedy falls flat and jokes don't work. Stay away from it. I watched it, so you don't have to.

HUNGAMA 2 - 1.0 Stars. (G)

Director - Priyadarshan

Stars - Paresh Rawal, Meezaan Jafri, Shilpa Shetty Kundra

Hungama 2 - Trailer

Once upon a time there was a movie called Hungama, it was a whatever dud... apparently not! Priyadarshan jumped out of his grave and made another one! Why would you do that? Why would an accomplished director of yesteryear come back to humiliate himself? Why would people take all sorts of garbage but question what is in a vaccine? Why ... why... because sky is too high. A jaded Paresh Rawal doing comedy, Shilpa Shetty playing Paresh Rawal's wife!! Good lord sometimes there is no answers to questions. Why do we even ask a Question... what is a question anyway?

CHEHRE - 3.0 Stars (G)

Director - Rumi Jaffery

Stars - Amitabh Bachchan, Emraan Hashmi, Krystle D'Souza

Chehre - Trailer

The movie is a thriller in a mansion inhabited by few old people who like to play games depicting their pre-retirement career in judiciary. They trap people and play games trying to find if the person is guilty or not. Mr Hashmi is one of their subjects. the oldies playing games are Amitabh and others. This movie seems to be a copy of some European movie where the maker did not bother to adapt it to Indian setting either. It is snowing and landscape is like swiss alps, and their is only one mansion for miles that is cut from the world except for these oldies who easily reach their. Anyway small details. The movie is not too bad, it looks bad at the beginning but once you adjust your expectations to this small budget thriller it is pretty good to keep it on till the end.

SANAK - 3.5 Stars. (G)

Director - Kanishk Varma

Stars - Vidyut Jammwal, Rukmini Maitra, Neha Dhupia

Sanak - Trailer

We are fan of Vidyut's fight scenes and we want him to only work in stupid action thrillers and he delivers exactly what we asked for. So nothing to complaint.. right? Well, we here at this blog always want more. Thanks Vidyut for listening, but now your next step is to be that 'cool dude' who kills and doesn't flinch and then delivers a cool one liner. You somehow are not doing that. Why? well.. we stopped asking why.. but still think about it. You still want to put realism by giving this look that you are worried, we don't want an action hero worried we want you to deliver a one liner in face of death and then punch. Thanks and you are welcome. Movie is about a Boy Friend who's stuck outside and terrorist are inside a hospital and he needs to save everyone and his girl because you know that's what makes a good movie.

SARDAR UDHAM - 4.0 Stars. (R)

Director - Shoojit Sircar

Stars - Vicky Kaushal, Banita Sandhu, Shaun Scott

Sardar Udham - Trailer

Be ready to be depressed and throw up! I think that is what Mr Soojit Sircar aimed at doing by making this movie. The last half an hour delves in exactly how Jallian wala Bagh could have looked after the massacre in 1930s and it is almost unwatchable. If you remove that from consideration the movie is about life and times of Sardar Udham Singh who lived most of his life outside India trying to hatch plots to bring British down. There are many unclear episodes and I think the idea is, he tried to work against huge odds trying almost single handedly to create a resistance against British after he lost his dear friend Bhagat Singh. Vicky Kaushal has put everything he had as an actor into his role and does a commendable job. He looks a unrecognizable as a teen Udham Vs an Udham in his 30s. The movie is not very entertaining but it does make you think and it's production cost is high, it feels like a costly very well made movie. What stands out is how all these freedom fighters were inspired by communism which was at that time the way to go. It talked to working oppressed class and they responded to it. They called each other comrades and still the oppressed Naxals of today do follow similar trends. We will never see any Indian acknowledging that these freedom fighters were very well read and were deep into philosophies of Marxism and communism. They did not want to just kill an enemy and destroy a building they were actually making a bigger impact and always were fighting a bigger enemy. They debated finer points of what it means to fight, they were not uber-nationalist that people make them to be. Beautiful distinction between them and what they are perceived by patriotic masses so many years later. I don't think these freedom fighters were just this one track - 'my nation, my people, i will kill you no matter what' type of people, they were deep thinkers.

SHERNI - 3.5 Stars. (G)

Director - Amit Masurkar

Stars - Vidya Balan, Gopal Datt, Vijay Raaz

Sherni - Trailer

I don't know how I skipped this movie from reviewing. This is pretty old one but thought might as well cover it for sake of completion. Vidya Balan makes a rare appearance in this movie as a woman forest officer who faces omnipresent sexism in a field dominated by 'manly men' types. She navigates her battles with -1) A tiger she needs to be compassionate towards. 2) Face the ire of villagers who don't have any protection or help from government. 3) Face incompetent bosses 4) Keep morale of a spirited forest officer team who are dedicated to their duty. 4) Keep society happy by doing her bit as a bahu and wife. 5) Keep idiots entertained who are just 'men' who know how to kill even if it is not needed. She needs to keep Tiger alive as well as Villagers safe with limited finances and maturity of people and things around her. The movie depicts how difficult it is to work in a government department and still care about your job. This is not about forest or tiger conservation but can easily be stretched to everything in life. A good watch which meanders in pace but if you can fast forward to finish you won't be disappointed.

TOOFAN - 3.5 Stars. (G)

Director - Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra

Stars - Farhan Akhtar, Mrunal Thakur, Paresh Rawal

Toofan - Trailer

Farhan knows what movies he needs to do. He is pretty good actor but he has limitations. The movie goes as far as he takes it, as I said he is good but limited; same is the movie. The movie goes through very standard sports movie routine a la-Rocky where the roadside 'gunda' becomes a boxer falls in love goes through ups and downs. Thanks to Mrunal who has this tender but strong presence in the movie that makes Toofan's love real and makes the movie tick. Overall the movie is ordinarily good and goes at a good pace with high production value. Watch it instead of other more popular duds you were planning to watch.

DYBBUK - 3.0 Stars. (PG13)

Director - Jay.k

Stars - Emraan Hashmi, Nikita Dutta, Manav Kaul

Dybbuk - Trailer

Emraan Hashmi is doing horror and thriller movies! In Bollywood this is a sign of not getting better movies. This horror / thriller is easily the one of the better made Hindi movies, though they do have very low standards. Dybbuk has the same spirit formula but this time done with a 'jewish' belief angle to make it a little different. The pace could be faster but it is not slow. The movie has a great climax and hence it rises from a B grade horror to something better.

THALAIVI - 2.5 Stars. (G)

Director - A.L. Vijay

Stars - Kangana Ranaut, Arvind Swamy, Nassar

Thalaivi - Trailer

Kangana can't do anything right, no I am not talking about her mind which has never done anything right but her film choices. This time she plays 'Jayalalitha' the south super star and eventually CM of Tamil Nadu. Why they took Kangana and not a South star is a mystery. Kangana is a good actor similar to Farhan, she is good to a point in certain roles but can't just effortlessly take a movie to wherever it needs to go. Her inimitable style makes her Kangana no matter who she plays, but to her credit she gives her best. The movie itself sets up the old times very well. All the old style movies and tamil movie industry is set up really good. This could be a good movie in Tamil but for Hindi it was just whatever. Arvind Swamy the Roja guy is unrecognizable and is also the best part of the movie, he excels in his role as the Super Star CM who brings Jaya to politics. I think people in South would know all the stories they are trying to tell but for me it was an OK update on Jayalalitha.

                                                        BUDGET MOVIES
   -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CASH - 1.0 Stars. (G)

Director - Rishab Seth

Stars - Amol Parashar, Smiriti Kalra, Gulshan Grover

Cash - Trailer

oh.. I realize we never completed watching this movie. hmm... it was a drag, I know my tag line is 'I watch it, so you don't have to' but come on man, you don't pay me anything. Forget it, I take the executive decision not to complete it unless I am ordered by my boss to finish it. The movie still revolves around demonetisation and how our lead character is trying to make a fast buck from taking old money and converting to real. We have seen these movies before and not much will happen in it, I guarantee it.

SHIDDAT - 3.0 Stars. (PG)

Director - Kunal Deshmukh

Stars - Sunny Kaushal, Radhika Madan, Mohit Raina

Shiddat - Trailer

A crazy love story! you know how it used to be? A Great Love has to be a Crazy love, otherwise it is not love? Boy will do anything to reach his love. A Tezaab type of love story? I think that's what they are trying to achieve. Sunny Kaushal is brother of his famous brother and hence valid actor I guess. He is pretty good for his first movie but he can't carry this load of emoting that needs a superstar-actor package. Radhika Madan also is a cute girl but hardly can take you to a level where you have a lump in the throat as you root for them.

The movie is a sports movie turned into a Love Story turned into a crazy love story. A fling turns into love and the lover goes crazy and wants to go 'saat samundar paar' to reach his love. It's an ok affair.

ARTSY
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JAI BHIM - 4.0 Stars. (PG13)

Director - T.J. Gnanavel

Stars - Suriya, Lijo Mol Jose, Manikandan

Jai Bhim - Trailer

The movie is not an original Hindi movie but has garnered lot of attention and for all the right reasons. The movie tracks a real case and how Dalits and poor have no voice. I know most of you will prefer Sooryavanshi kind of headache even though you will have to take a pill after that, instead of sitting through this masterpiece. Part of the reason is because we all are guilty of making the unjust society we live in. The movie shows how cops are used to put cases on Dalits and put them in jail and how an upright lawyer takes up a case and finds out how flimsy some of the arguments are. In the end how do these people survive in this unjust system? or do they?

AHAAN - 4.0 Stars. (PG13)

Director - Nikhil Pherwani

Stars - Arif Zakaria, Niharika Singh, Abuli Mamaji

Ahaan - Trailer

I did not want to watch it, so i pushed it off until I had nothing left to watch. A movie about a handicapped person is something we have watched many times. Hindi movies don't do a good job on them plus they are depressing. Anyway... Ahaan surprisingly avoids all the pitfalls and actually is more of a story about regular people who have all sorts of demons in them as they fight their way through various problems and Ahaan is just a side character happily going through his life. If you can make yourself sit through first 30 minutes I think you will like it.

BAIKUNTH - 2.5 Stars. (PG13)

Director - Vishwa Bhanu

Stars - Vishwa Bhanu, Sangam Shukla, Vijay Thaku

Baikunth - Trailer

This is one movie that I did not know what to make of. I always like the movies that just are whacky and surprise you, but this one disgustingly surprised me. Humans when faced with poverty and unending misery may resort to being bereft of any compassion or emotion. The movie shows 2 friends who are at the bottom of the barrel in society and the life has eaten up their soul that they can't find emotions towards even their own family. The guy sits around and watch his wife die during child birth and does not show much emotion! what the heck! I know you won't watch this one but I was like what the heck! I know this must be the case for many, but come on man.. what the heck!
